1.1 Objective
Driveability analysis simulated to specify the hammer and driving refusal criteria based on
specific pile size, representatives soil condition (provided by PT Bahana Teknik Raya) to
achieve the require bearing capacity with minimum issue during the pilling works. The
driveability study performed using GRLWEAP 2010 (PDI®).
From the given soil data, there the soil layer was dominated by clay soil. First 14 m
depth there is very soft clay followed by medium to stiff clay from 14 m – 30 m depth. From
30 – 36 and 42 – 70 m depth there is very stiff clay, and hard sandy slit layer was found in
between.
Foundation type used on this project is Spun Pile with diameter of 600 mm. The pile
manufactured by WIKA (class A3) with specification of concrete compressive strength (fc’)
= 52 MPa and pre-stressed strength (fpe’) = 4.2 MPa. Based on FHWA recommendation, the
maximum compressive stress and tension stress will be 40 MPa and 6 MPa; respectively.

In this analysis we simulate piles driveability up to 70.0 m depth for final set of ≤ 25.4 mm/10
blows. Using driveability analysis can simulate the blow count requirement to penetrate into
several depth. Also, with driveability analysis can give the prediction of pile’s compression
and tension stress at each penetration depth. Table below presents the analysis of pile
driveability simulation which contains; expected capacity, blow count (BC), compression
stress (CS) and tension stress (TS) and hammer stroke on each penetration depth.
*Note : aaaa expected first pile penetration, driving will stop at this hard soil lens.
aaa final penetration if pile driving manages to penetrate hard soil lens at 37.0 m.
Simulation analysis shown ≤ 25.4 mm/10 blows of final set can be achieved at two
possibilities penetration under specific hammer energy with representative soil data. The
result described as follow:
• Based on soil investigation data there were soil lens / hard layer at 38.0 – 40.0 m depth
with NSPT value about 55.
• To achieve required final set of ≤ 25.4 mm/10 blows, there are two possibilities depth
of penetration to be achieved. If pile driving could penetrate through hard soil lens at
37.0 – 39.0 m depth, thus expected finals set will be achieved at about 41.0 – 43.0 m
depth. However, if it could not penetrate the soil lens, it would stop at 37.0 – 39.0 m
depth. If this occurred, suggested to do evaluate the potential for long-term settlement
due to underlying soil layer.
• Pile compression and tensile stresses during driving are still below allowable limit.
However, the use of low stroke is highly recommended at first 15.0 m depth of soft soil
layer to reduce the tension stress.

4.2. Recommendation
1. This GRLWEAP report analysis only conducted and limited for spesific area based on
bored hole Jembatan 5 – BH P1 PIK 2, thus variated condition might be found during
actual driving. It is highly recommended for the geotechnical engineer to summarize
soil investigation data and compare this report analysis.
2. Indicator piles shall be performed with the test piles to ensure the analysis and
‘mapping’ local anomaly of soil profile, if exist. Dynamic testing will highly
recommended for those indicator pile.
3. The variation on pile length penetration could happen due to the variation of soil
stratum. By driveability analysis, there are two possibilities depth to achieved final set
set ≤ 25.4 mm/10 blows which are about 37 m and 41 m depth with expected pile
capacity about 3364 ~ 3498 kN.
4. Low stroke of hammer at soft soil area is highly recommended to reduce tension stress.
5. This driveability analysis is only a simulation, the result of actual pile driving on site
could be different from this analysis due to variation of actual hammer energy ,
different of soil layer and another variable that might be not match with actual driving
condition. For comprehensive accurate result suggest to conduct PDA Continuous
Monitoring during pile driving and back analysis shall perform afterwards.
