Persuasive Speech Preparation Outline
Speech Topic : Anime has educational value
Speech Type : Question in policy
General Purpose Statement : To persuade
Specific Purpose Statement : To persuade my audience to start watching anime as another way
of life learning.
Central Idea : Anime have educational value for the audience such as exposing
the audience to Japanese culture and language, and enhance the
critical thinking of the audience.

Step 1 – Attention
Malaysians have this perception that anime are just for children whereas in Japan, the United
States and other developed countries, animation is another branch of art and culture that are liked
by people regardless of age. (Digest, 2015)

Figure 1 - Diferences Between Cartoon and Anime

Anime has been a wave to younger generation nowadays and that includes me. The wave hits me
quite early since I have been watching anime since primary school. Anime is the term used in
Japan. The word anime is taken from the English word ‘animation’. But some Japanese could not
pronounce it accurately hence they shorten it to ‘anime.’ (Digest, 2015)

Step 2 – Need
Although nowadays, younger generation have been exposed to animation since babies, there are
some who believe anime did not bring any benefit other than just a source of entertainment. The
anime that keeps on popping out on Malaysia TV Channel is one that do not holds beneficial
value to the audience such as Crayon Shin Chan which teaches the audience bad things like
pulling down his pants on public.

The media randomly airing the anime that is popular without filtering the bad side of anime
which leaves audience to bad perception in anime. As for the audience, they overlook the
positive traits that the anime is trying to portray and instead only focusing on the negative traits
like violence.

1
Step 3 – Satisfaction
Anime actually is much more than just entertainment. It bring positive values to the audience.
1) Anime could be a good material for studying Japanese. Anime contains various dialogues
and involve nearly every aspect of conversations. The dialogues of Anime are usually spoken
with standard and clear pronunciations. Besides, the scenes of Anime is so attractive and
interesting so the learners can continue to practice their conversation abilities. (Shan Junjie,
2017)

2) Anime helps students to study in a way that they love. Professor Yuichi Higuchi, a professor
from Tama University in Japan said that anime helps in raising a child’s reading
comprehension and broaden their vocabulary. (Tackett, 2013) Anime is an excellent teaching
tool since it attracts students’ attention and creates a fun environment. (Furo)

3) Anime increase the ability of the audience in critical thinking. For example Detective Conan
which revolved about criminal investigation. Children can also learn from characters and
people that appeared in the mass media, especially in the television. (Iza Sharina Binti
Sallehuddin, 2011)

Step 4 – Visualization
Imagine an anime that could teach you literature. For example, Chihayafuru is an anime revolved
around this one girl that love Japanese poems, she enthusiastically started and promotes Karuta
club and later on succeed in making the club well-known and acknowledged by the whole
school. How? The poems being taught to the viewer? Through the card competition in the anime
which called Karuta. This game use real poem exist in Japanese culture and the game itself do
exist in Japan not just a fiction.

2
Step 5 – Action
In conclusion, other than a source of entertainment , Anime do have educational value for the
audience such as exposing the audience to Japanese culture and language, and enhance the
critical thinking of the audience. So, I urge all of you to start watching anime from now on. Here,
I bring my anime collections which is more than 100 anime for you to start having a lesson with
anime. With that, I thank you.
