A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN INTRODUCTION TO PHILIPPINE LITERATURE

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
1. Identify geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial to
contemporary and representative text from the regions.
2. Write a close analysis and critical interpretation of literacy text and,
3. Show a sense of adaptability of the Philippine Literary History.

II. SUBJECT: 21st CENTURY LITERATURE FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND THE WORLD
MELCS: Writing a close analysis and critical interpretation of literary texts and doing an adaptation of these require from
the learner the ability to identify:
a. the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial to the contemporary

Before we begin our lesson, let’s have a short ice breaker.

Very good! Today we will talk about The Introduction to


Philippine Literature

E. Lesson Proper

Now who as an idea what is Literature? Ma’am Literature comes from the Latin word “LITERA”
means letters. This is a body of literary productions, either
oral, written, or visual containing imaginative language
that realistically portrays thoughts, emotions and
experiences of the human condition.
Very good answer! Now let’s proceed to our main topic.

I. Pre- Colonial Period

Pre-Colonial Period’s time was from BC to 1564


It was based on oral traditions
Crude on ideology and phraseology

Anyone who can give me the meaning of phraseology? Ma’am, phraseology is the way that a particular person
uses his words.
That’s right! Each person has a different way on how he will
use words to make a good literature.

Does anyone know some literacy forms? Some literacy forms are oral literatures, folk songs, folk
tales and epics.

Good! Now let’s first talk about Oral Literature. Oral literature
has three kinds.

First we have Riddles. This is a battle of wits among


participants.
It uses one or more image to refer to an object to be guessed.

Next we have proverbs. Do you have any idea what proverbs These are the wise sayings that contain a metaphor used
is? to teach as a food for thought
.

That is correct! Proverbs are wise sayings. Sometimes it is also


used often to give inspiration in life and warning like in the
bible.

Last we have tanaga where it expresses insights and lessons


on life.

We also have Folk songs.

It is a form of folk lyric which expresses the hopes and


aspirations, the people’s lifestyle as well as their lives.

Its often repetitive and sonorous, didactic and naïve

Can you give me some example of folk songs? Ma’am we have lullaby and ambahan.

That is correct.

Lullaby is a quiet, gentle song sung to send a child to sleep.

Can you give me some examples of lullaby? We have Oyayi o Hele

Now we have the second type which is the folk tales.

Folk tales also has four kinds.

First we have Myths.

What is Myth? It explains how the world was created, how certain animals
possess certain characteristics, why some places have
waterfalls, volcanoes, flora or fauna.
That is correct!
Now do you know any myth? Ma’am we have Sarimanok

Correct! Sarimanok is a Muslim myth telling the origin of a


super bird in the Philippines that looks like a chicken with a
super rainbow tail.

Next we have legends. Anyone who knows what legend is? Legends explains the origin of things.

Correct! Legends explains the origin of things. Now can you


give me an example of a Legend? Some of example of legend are “Ang Alamat ng Pinya”
and “Alamat ng Sampaloc”
We also have our fable wherein the main characters in this
story are animals that speaks and acts like humans.

Can you give me an example of fable? Ma’am some examples of fable is The Lion and the
mouse and The ant and the grasshopper

That’s very nice. Now last for our Folk tale is fantastic stories
wherein it deals with the underworld characters.

Samples for folk stories are the “aswang”, elf stories.

Next we have Epics

What is an Epic? It is narratives of sustained length based on oral tradition


revolving around super natural events or heroic deeds.

That is right epic is also one of the famous literature in the


Philippines.

Now can you give some examples of epic? Ma’am we have Bernardo Carpio and Biag ni Lam Ang.

Very good!

So far do you have any questions for our pre-colonial period? None so far Ma’am.

Okay so we are going to proceed with the Spanish


Colonization Period.

II. Spanish Colonization Period (1565 to 1863)

It has two distinct classifications. Can anyone give me these It is the religious and secular classification Ma’am.

That is correct! Also during this time, Spanish was introduced


as the medium of communication.

Now let’s discuss the first classification which is the religious


literature.

Religious literature has two types.

What do you think is the first one? Ma’am the first type is the Pasyon

That is correct! Pasyon is a long narrative poem about the


passion and death of Christ.
Next we have the Senakulo.

Who as an idea about senakulo? It is the dramatization of the pasyon.

Very good! That is right. Senakulo is the dramatization of


pasyon. This story re-enacts the passion of Christ.

If we have religious literature, we also have a non- religious


literature.

Do you know what it is? It is the secular literature Ma’am

Yes that is correct. Secular literature also consists of three


kinds.

First, we have the Awit. It is a colorful tale of chivalry made for


singing and chanting.

Anyone who can give me an example of Awit? Ma’am we have the Ibong Adarna.

That is correct! Ibong Adarna is one example of Awit.

Next we have the Korido. It is a metrical tale.


Florante at Laura is an example of Korido
Who can give me an example of Korido?

That is brilliant!

Lastly, we have prose narrative. It is written to prescribe proper


decorum.

Additional to our lesson, Spanish occupied Philippines in early


15th century.

The Filipinos have their own alphabet back then do you what it It is the alibata Ma’am
is?

That is correct. Alibata or baybayin is the first Filipino Alphabet.

What do you think is the reason? The Spaniards banned alibata because they believed that
is a work of evil.

Yes that is correct.

The early printing press in the Philippines was run and


monopolized by the Spanish friars.

Also, during the Spanish colonization, Filipinos felt they are


being harassed. Because of this, a propaganda movement and
a group was formed

Do you know what was its name? It is called La Solidaridad.

Correct! Now who was the founder of the group? Jose Rizal was the founder of La Solidaridad.

revolutionary period

III. Nationalistic/Propaganda and Revolutionary Period

Its timeline is from 1864-1896.


This period planted seeds of nationalism in Filipinos.
The language in this time shifted from Spanish to Tagalog
It also addressed the masses instead of the “intelligentsia”

First we have the Propaganda Literature. This type of literature


is reformatory in objective.

Under Propaganda Literature, we have Political Essays.

Anyone who has an idea about political essays? These are satires, editorials and news articles written to
attack and expose evil of Spanish rules

of political essays? and La Solidaridad

Very good! Now who was the founder of diariong tagalog? Marcelo H. Del Pilar was the founder of diariong tagalog.

Next we have political novels. These are masterpieces that


paved way to revolution.

Now can you name the two famous political novels? Ma’am it is Jose Rizal’s Noli Matangere.

IV. Revolutionary Literature

Moving on, we now have the revolutionary literature Examples of this is True Decalogue by Apolinario Mabini
and Katapusang Hibik ng Pilipinas by Andres Bonifacio.
It is more propagandistic than literary as it is more violent in
nature and demanded complete independence for the country.

Who can give me examples of revolutionary literature? None so far Ma’am.

Now we will be proceeding to American Colonization period.

IV. American Colonization Period (1898-1944)

This period was also known as the period of apprenticeship


wherein Filipino writers imitated English and American Models.
Also, poems written were amateurish and mushy, which
phrasing and diction is awkward and artificial.

This period was also highly influenced by Western literary


trends like romanticism and realism.

Question, what do you think is the most prevalent literary form


during this period?

Very good! No we will be moving to the next period of literature. It is the short story Ma’am.

V. Japanese Occupation Period (1941-1960)

This is the period were the one of the darkest days in the
history and literary tradition of the Philippines.

Growth of English Literature and language was interrupted.

Censored all publications except Tribune and Philippine

Can you site some example what happened during the war It is when Tagalog poets broke away from Balagtas

VI. Contemporary Period (1960-Present)

This is the era of modern literature.

During the beginning of this period, Martial law repressed and


curtailed human rights including freedom of press.

The writers used symbolisms and allegories to drive home their


message at the face of heavy censorship.

From the 80’s onwards, writers continue to show dynamism


and innovation.

2. Create a poster or drawing based on what you have learned and at the back of your drawing, write the a short
statement explaining why is it the best for you.
3. Attach your work on a long white folder.
