Lab 6 Worksheet

Part 1:   Force vs. Displacement

Fill the table below

Displacement (m) m(kg) F s=W ( N )

1 0.15 0.05 0.49

2 0.25 0.1 0.98

3 0.345 0.15 1.47

4 0.44 0.2 1.96

Answer here: y = 5.2187x - 0.3159

When the weight of the object increases, so too does the forces of static friction. In order to cancel
each other out at equilibrium, it takes a further displacement for the force of the spring to increase to
the point where it can finally pull the object back toward its natural length.
 Part 2: Period vs mass

Fill the table below

Mass (kg) Period (s)

Part 3:

Answer here: y = -27.714x2 + 26.003x + 1.812

As the mass of the object increases the period of time it takes to complete 5 oscillations also increases.
This is because the larger mass moves a farther distance to reach equilibrium before springing back up
toward the spring’s natural length.
