Vivian and Noelle both leave the park at the same time, but in opposite directions.

If
Noelle travels 5 mph faster than Vivian and after 8 hours, they are 136 miles apart, how
fast in mile per hour is each traveling?
Total Hours = 8 hours
Total Distance = 136 miles
Noelle travel 5mph faster than Vivian
Step 1: Solve for the total distance per hour.
total distance
total distance per hour=
total hour
136 miles
total distance per hour=
8 hours
total distance per hour=17 miles
Step 2: Let x = speed of Noelle; then x-5 is the speed of Vivian. (Since Noelle
travel faster 5mph faster than Vivian)
Step 3: Solve for x
x + x−5=17 combine the like terms which is x
2 x−5=17 transpose 5
2 x=17+5 add 17 to 5
2 x=22 divide both sides by 2
x=11

So, Noelle is travelling at 11mph.

In order to find Vivian’s speed, we just have to subtract Noelle’s speed by 5. Therefore,
Vivian’s speed is 6mph.

To check:

After 8 hours Noelle travels 8 * 11 = 88 miles

8 ×11=88 miles

Vivian travels

6 ×11=66 miles
The total is 136 miles which is equivalent to the Total Distance.
