1. An FM modulator has a sensitivity of 30 kHz/V and operates at a carrier frequency of
175 MHz. Find the output frequency for an instantaneous value of the modulating signal
equal to 150 mV and −2 V.

2. The same FM modulator as in Problem 1 is modulated by a 3 V sine wave. Calculate the

maximum deviation.

3. An FM broadcast receiver operates at its maximum deviation of 75 kHz. Find the

modulation index for a sinusoidal modulating signal with a frequency of 50 Hz.

4. An analogue video signal is frequency-modulated using a carrier of 350 MHz, and a

frequency deviation of 155 kHz. Determine the required bandwidth for this FM signal
to be recovered undistorted, and the modulation index. The bandwidth for analogue
video is 5 MHz.
5. Why does an FM signal have better quality than an AM signal? Explain briefly. Use
pictures to help your explanation.

The frequency of the FM signal waves is faster because more waves are sent in a shorter
time interval and has a higher bandwidth with better sound quality. while the AM signal
means that the size of the waves is larger, which means that the waves transmit less
information and this makes it of poorer quality because noise is filtered out. Below is an
image of the signs for comparison

6. An FM signal has a deviation of 10 kHz and a modulating frequency of 2 kHz.

Calculate the modulation index. Is this signal narrowband or wideband? Why?
The index modulation equal to 5, the signal is wideband. This means that the carrier
deviation is five times larger than the maximum frequency present in the signal. This means
that the spectrum will be larger, i.e. higher bandwidth.

7. Write an equation for the modulated signal in Problem 6, assuming a carrier frequency of
101 MHz and a sinusoidal message.

8. Calculate the frequency deviation for an FM signal with a modulating frequency at 5 kHz
and a modulation index of 2.
