b) In a pin jointed 4 bar mechanism ABCD, the lengths of various links are
AB = 25 mm; BC = 87.5 mm; CD = 50 mm and AD = 80 mm. The link AD is
fixed and the angle BAD = 135º. If the velocity of B is 1.8m/s in the clockwise
direction, find the velocity and acceleration of the midpoint of BC, angular
velocity and angular acceleration of link CB and CD.

12. a) i) Derive the frictional torque developed in flat pivot bearing under uniform
pressure condition. (6)
ii) A multiple friction clutch is required to transmit 75 kW at 1500 rpm. The
plates are alternately of steel and phosphor bronze and they run in oil.
The co-efficient is 0.2 and the axial pressure with which they are pressed
together is 2600 N. The inner and outer diameters of the disc are 150 mm and
250 mm. Calculate the number of plates required. Assume uniform intensity
of pressure. (10)

b) A compressor, requiring 90 kW is to run at about 250 r.p.m. The drive is by V-belts
from an electric motor running at 750 r.p.m. The diameter of the pulley on the
compressor shaft must not be greater than 1 metre while the centre distance
between the pulleys is limited to 1.75 metre. The belt speed should not exceed
1600 m/mm. Determine the number of V-belts required to transmit the power
if each belt has a cross sectional area of 375 mm2, density 1000 kg/m3 and an
allowable tensile stress of 2.5 MPa. The groove angle of the pulley is 35º. The
coefficient friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. Calculate also the
length required of each belt. (16)

13. a) A cam of base circle 50 mm diameter is to operate a roller follower of 20 mm

diameter. The follower is to have SHM. The angular speed of the cam is 300 rpm.
Draw the cam profile for the cam lift of 50 mm. Angle of ascent = 60º, Angle of
dwell = 40º, and angle of descent = 110º, followed by angle of dwell again. Also
calculate the maximum velocity and acceleration during ascent and descent. (16)

b) Two gear wheels mesh externally and are to give a velocity ratio of 3. The
teeth are of involute form; module = 6 mm, addendum = one module, pressure
angle = 14.5º. The pinion rotates at 700 rpm. Determine :
i) The number of teeth on the pinion to avoid interference on it and the
corresponding number of teeth on the wheel,
ii) The length of path and arc of contact,
iii) The number of pairs of teeth in contact and
iv) The maximum velocity of sliding. (16)

14. a) A rotating shaft carries four unbalanced masses 18 kg, 14 kg, 16 kg and 12 kg
at radii 50 mm, 60 mm, 70 mm and 60 mm respectively. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th
masses revolve in planes 80 mm, 160 mm and 280 mm respectively from the
plane of first mass and are angularly located at 60º, 135º and 270º respectively
measured clockwise from the first mass looking from the end of the shaft. The
shaft is dynamically balanced by two masses, both located at 50 mm radii and
revolving in planes mid-way between those of 1st and 2nd masses and midway
between those of 3rd and 4th masses. Determine the magnitudes of their masses
and their respective angular positions. (16)

Mass of rotating parts per cylinder = 300 kg;
Mass of reciprocating parts per cylinder = 360 kg.
Angle between cranks = 90. Crank radius = 0.3 m;
Cylinder lines = 1.75 m;
Radius of Balanced Mass = 0.75 m;
Wheel centers = 1.45 m.

balanced in planes of driving wheels, find their magnitude and angular positions
of balanced masses. (16)

mounted on five springs of negligible damping so that the force transmitted
is one-eleventh of the impressed force. Assume that the mass of the motor is
equally distributed among five springs. Determine the stiffness of each spring
and dynamic force transmitted to the base at the operating speed. (16)
