• Fit toothed shaft with pin to intake camshaft
sprocket. Push in toothed shaft until only 1 mm
of spline is visible f1!].
• Install washers and nuts PD. DO NOT tighten.
• Install plate spring with mark 'F' visible fE and
sensor gear fE to exhaust camshaft.
• Ensure arrow on sensor gear aligned with upper
edge of cylinder head fE. DO NOT tighten nuts.
• Pull out toothed shaft on exhaust side as far as
stop.
• Install and release secondary tensioner 1iJ.
• Pre-load timing chain with tool to 6 in. Ibs. 19.
• Slightly pre-tension plate spring by pressing'on
sensor gear fE. Tighten nuts fingertight.
• Set camshaft timing with tool as follows:
NOTE: Remove gasket before fitting special
tool No.11 6 150 fIl.
o Tighten screws and nuts in two stages
(in sequence shown) fIl:
o First stage: 44 in. Ibs.
o Second stage:
'A' - 15 ft. Ibs.
'B', 'C' - 7 ft. Ibs.
• Install timing chain tensioner B.
• Remove alignment tools and turn crankshaft two
turns.
• Ensure NO.1 cylinder at TDC. Use special tools.
• Remove camshaft timing setting tool fIl.
• Install VANOS unit [i).
NOTE: Screws behind sealing caps have
LH threads 6.

(CKP) sensor before removal.

sprockets.
• Observe all tightening torques.

Valve timing procedures


• Engine No.1 cylinder at TDC.
• Insert flywheel timing pin D.
• Ensure No.1 cylinder camshaft lobes are
facing B.
• Ensure arrows on camshaft sprockets face
upwards B.
• Install camshaft alignment tools D.
NOTE: Ensure camshaft lobes positioned as
shown.
• Pre-tension timing chain using special tool, prior
to tightening bolts of camshaft sprockets 1iJ.

• VANOS unit adjusting tool- BMW NO.116440. D Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts m (LH thread).
• Secondary tensioner locking tool - Tightening torque: 11 ft. Ibs. Loosen bolts 90°.
BMW NO.113310. D RH bank: Repeat adjustment of VANOS unit

o Ensure timing chain is taut between
sprockets on non-tensioned side.
o Tension chain before tightening bolts of
camshaft sprockets:
o Tightening torque:
