Q1. (a) Figure 1 shows a plant cell as seen under microscope M.

Electron microscope

Figure 1

(i) State TWO (2) advantages and TWO (2) disadvantages of microscope
M. Answer in not more than 60 words. (4 marks)

Advantages Disadvantages
-Higher range of magnification -Inability to analyse live specimens
-Higher resolution -Black and white image
-Higher quality images -Expensive
-Size are large

(ii) Lily Mae wants to isolate organelle K from the cell. Explain the
principle involved in isolating organelle K from the cell. Answer in not
more than 130 words. (9 marks)

(b) Treacher Collins syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by distinctive

abnormalities to the head and face. Mutation to a few numbers of genes in the
patient causes a reduced production of ribosomal RNA. With justification,
identify ONE (1) structure of a cell most likely to be affected by this mutation.
In your answer, discuss how the reduced production of ribosomal RNA affects
cellular activity. Answer in not more than 70 words. (5 marks)

(a) State TWO (2) characteristics of a eukaryotic cell. (2 marks)

Eukaryotic cell has DNA in nucleus which is bound by a membranous nuclear
envelope. It is membrane-bound organelles. It has cytoplasm in the region
between the plasma membrane and nucleus.

(b) Identify any THREE (3) parts or content of a plant cell nucleus. State their
functions. (6 marks)
 Chromatin condenses to form discrete chromosomes.
 Nuclear envelope encloses the nucleus, separating it from the cytoplasm.
 Nucleolus is the site of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis.

Q3. Figure 2 shows electron micrographs of four organelles in a eukaryotic cell, A, B, C
and D.

Figure 2

State the name and function of each organelle (A, B, C and D) in Table 1. (8 marks)

Table 1
Organelle Name Function
A Mitochondria Sites of cellular respiration.
B Golgi apparatus -Modifies products of the ER.
-Manufactures certain macromolecules.
-Sorts and packages materials into transport
vesicles.
C Chloroplast Site of photosynthesis.
D Rough ER Transport protein made by ribosome.

Q4. White blood cells and red blood cells are some of the components of the human
blood. Red blood cell lacks a nucleus and most organelles. Meanwhile white blood
cell consists of a nucleus and is abundant with bound ribosomes and Golgi apparatus.
Discuss how the organelles found in a white blood cell accommodate to its function.
Answer in not more than 150 words. (7 marks)
