• Disconnect battery ground cable.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with
timing gear(s) removed.
• Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
• Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
(unless otherwise stated).
• If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position
(CKP) sensor before removal.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
gears.
• Observe all tightening torques.,

Valve timing procedures

• Engine No.4 cylinder at TDC of compression
stroke.
• Crankshaft gear timing mark at 11 o'clock
position D.
• Align camshaft gear timing mark fJ and install.
• Check camshaft thrust clearance is
0.0015-0.0050 in. 8.
• If clearance is less than 0.0015 in. replace
spacer rings.
• If clearance is more than 0.0050 in. replace
thrust plate.

locked.
NOTE: Once tensioner has been
compressed, ensure distance from end to
end is 2.83 in. If not repeat resetting
procedure.
• Vehicles below 30,000 miles the tensioner is
released when the engine is first started.
• Vehicles over 30,000 miles manually release
tensioner by tapping the plunger.
NOTE: Crankshaft sprocket bolt MUST only
be used once.
• Torque crankshaft pulley bolt:
D -05 - 74 ft. Ibs. + 75° or

• Install chain and sprocket as an assembly
through the opening in the head to the crankshaft
sprocket and camshaft 111.
• Ensure dark link of chain aligned with timing
mark on crankshaft sprocket 6.
III into the timing chain. Ensure dark link of
chain aligned with timing mark on camshaft
sprocket Ill.
• Install the exhaust camshaft actuator (sprocket)
III to exhaust camshaft. Loosely install exhaust
camshaft actuator bolt Em.
NOTE: It may be necessary to temporarily
remove tool No.J-44221 fl to slightly rotate
and hold the exhaust camshaft to align the
pin to the exhaust camshaft sprocket.
• Install the timing chain tensioner arm mi.
• Set the timing chain tensioner IE before
installation:
o Press the tensioner plunger inward and
hold m.

o Turn lever counterclockwise.
o Hold the plunger in and insert a suitable pin
through the hole of the tensioner lever Oil.
o Slowly release the plunger.
• Install timing chain tensioner IE. Do not remove
pin Oil at this time.
• Fully advance the exhaust camshaft actuator III
by turning the inner hub m
clockwise.
WARNING: Engine damage may occur if
exhaust camshaft actuator not fully
advanced clockwise.
• Torque the exhaust camshaft actuator bolt Em to
0
18 ft. Ibs. + 135 •
• Remove the pin Oil from the timing chain
tensioner.
• Remove camshaft alignment tool No.J-44221 fl.
• Install the top chain guide m.
• Ensure timing marks m,
6, and III are aligned.
• Torque new crankshaft pulley bolt to
110 ft. Ibs. + 180°.

compressed, ensure distance from end to

• Vehicles over 30,000 miles manually release
tensioner by tapping the plunger.
NOTE: Crankshaft sprocket bolt MUST only

• To install balancer shaft chain:
o Align uniquely colored chain link with intake
side balancer shaft timing mark D.
o Align first matching colored chain link with
crankshaft timing mark 6.
o Align second matching colored chain link with

• Maximum wear of balancer shaft chain guides
and tensioner guide is 0.045 in.
• To install camshaft timing chain:
o Align uniquely colored chain link with intake

sprockets.
• Observe tightening torques.

o Corvette: Align crankshaft mark with
crankshaft pulley mark.
o Install the crankshaft pulley, using tool
Nos.J-41665-1/2.
o Ensure the distance 'X' IB between the
- crankshaft and the crankshaft pulley face is
0.094-0.176 in.
o Install the used crankshaft pulley bolt A !J
and torque to 240 ft. Ibs.
o Remove the used crankshaft pulley bolt.
o Install a new crankshaft pulley bolt B !J and
torque to 37 ft. Ibs. + 140°.

an assembly.
• Ensure timing marks facing each other on center
line between crankshaft and camshaft D & 6.

• Retract lower timing chain tensioner and lock
using a pin 19.
• Install the timing chain tensioner and remove the
pin. Tightening torque: 97 in.lbs.
NOTE: Camshafts can be turned without
valves contacting pistons when crankshaft
set at 90° BTDC No.1 cylinder.
