AGENDA: A Perfect Storm: Climate Change &
Urban Poverty.
By Vinodini Priya.S | chinadaily | 25th July 2021.

C limate change and Urban Poverty, an improbable topic currently is a

probable situation which each and every cities face. The unpredictable global
phenomenon’s like floods, draughts and storms, & increased spread of tropical
diseases with a pandemic virus are disrupting the lifestyle of the urban people at
a large-scale.
Let’s take the events like 2019’s Australian Bushfire followed by 2020’s
monsoonal floods in Michigan, Assam, Bangladesh & currently its continuing
in this present 2021 also in Colorado, New Mexico, & the Mexican Gulf fire
(Pemex’s Flagship Ku Maloob oil development platform).
We are aware about the COP21 in Paris 2015 (UN Climate Change conference)
were 196 parties adopted themselves to legally bind into international treaty on
climate change which entered into force in November, 2016. Those countries
were also having a 5 year cycle for climate action plan & by 2020, they could
submit their plans recognized as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
In the UNDP conference dated 24th July 2021, few delegates were sticking to
the solutions & development of rural people admist climatic change
consequence rather than sticking to the agenda that is “Climate change & Urban
poverty”.
But, Delegate of China, Thailand & Switzerland spoke about carbon emissions
and its solutions to be taken.
Especially Delegate of China stated that, “they call upon helping hand from
USA and other member states to suggest ways to reduce their carbon emission
and provide them alternative way for attaining sustainable energy”.
Reporter’s first question to Delegate of Indonesia is that, “they concentrated on
assisting to poor, education to farmers & undergraduates based on STEM
education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths), but that was more
likely towards the rural poverty & not urban poverty admist the climatic change.
So what’s their stand towards it?” To which the Delegate declared that, “Urban
Poverty is wider area which couldn’t be brought easily into sustainability
admist this climate change.”
Reporter’s second & third question was posed to American countries to which
the Delegate of Brazil answered them as:
1. “Pemax’s fire in Mexican gulf resulting to global warming:
 Mismanagement of Mexican policies;
 Mexican’s must move towards better sustainable ways of getting
the energy sources & asks them to implement the say they
suggested.”
2. “Prior Steps for flash floods occurring in Colorado, Mexico & so on:
 Suggested Measures: Disaster Management Responses basically
Mitigation of climate change and Adaption for population during
this disaster phase;
 Suggested to implement a crucial transition phase to be taken to
turn the harmful energy with regard to climatic change towards a
cleaner energies;
 Stated their country measures like ‘Safety network programmes’,
‘Identification of persons’ which would help them in faster
response in times of crisis.”
Hoping that, this conference will bring up solutions towards the given agenda &
will implement the same with united goals of Delegates from China, Thailand,
Brazil, Indonesia, Switzerland & others.
