CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Garlic (Allium sativum) has acquired a reputation in different traditions as a

prophylactic as well as therapeutic medicinal plant. Garlic has antibacterial, antifungal,

antiviral, and antiseptic properties from allicin. Allicin helps to kill the bacteria causing

skin infections. It also helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, and improve blood

circulation. These beneficial effects allow the skin to receive more nutrients. Grapefruit

(Citrus paradisi) has Vitamin C plays a vital role in the formation of collagen, the main

support system of the skin and conclude that vitamin C could help protect against sun

damage and aging. Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits are particularly effective

at brightening and reviving the skin due to their acidic properties. Grapefruit in particular,

has recently become a key ingredient in skincare products and a staple in many skin

afflictions for those desiring a comforting complexion from this fruit. Included in many

cleansing products, also possesses antiseptic and antibacterial properties which work to

clean and clear congested skin for a satisfying outcome for the skin.

Nowadays, having skin infections is a common problem for the people, this is

caused by the exposure of the skin from dirty environment, and other things that can

result to skin reaction. Tinea pedis or athlete's foot is a superficial inflammatory infection

of the skin of the feet caused by dermatophyte fungi. Athlete's foot is characterized by

whitish macerated skin and itchy or asymptomatic erythema between the toes, usually in

the fourth and fifth spaces. Blisters and cracks in the skin between the toes may cause

1
pain and inflammation of the exposed raw tissue. A concomitant bacterial infection may

also be present and require antibiotic treatment. Athlete's foot is typically diagnosed by

visual inspection of cell culture and may be differentially diagnosed as bacterial

inflammatory and eczema. The most common complications of athlete's foot are

subsequent toenail infection or bacterial skin infection. These infections can be cured by

using grapefruit and garlic that contains organic and natural compounds that can

contribute in treating as such. Grapefruit and Allium sativum possess the capabilities of

being a good agent against infections and disease caused by bacteria. Grapefruit and

Allium sativum in antimicrobial treatment is essential in order to monitor resistance in

various pathogens.

This study aims to test the effectiveness of Grapefruit seed and Allium sativum

extract as a natural component in making antimicrobial foot cream to test for athletes’

foot.

sativum) is not effective as an antimicrobial and treating athletes’ foot.

Ha: Alternative Hypothesis

The organic foot cream made of Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) and Garlic (Allium

sativum) is effective as an antimicrobial and treating athletes’ foot.

4
Significance of the Study

The results and findings of these research will be going to benefit the community,

researchers and specially the student athletes. Through the pulverized grape fruit seed and

garlic extract as an anti-microbial foot cream, the student-athletes will be able to have

solutions that will able to help them treat their fungi, and other foot infections.

For the community who want a natural therapy to treat their fungal infections,

they will no longer have financial complications in finding such treatment for and buying

commercial products because these natural ingredients can be found anywhere. Simple at

may it seem but the community will be able to adopt the better use of grape fruit seed and

garlic extract.

For the respondents and future researchers, the study conducted will be the benefit

This study entitled "Citrus Pulverized Paradisi Seed and Allium Sativum Extract

as an Antimicrobial Foot Cream" is an applied research that aims to solve problems

related to hygiene and sanitation through the use of organic materials. As Calmorin

(2010) stated, applied research is the type of research that involves seeking new

applications of the scientific knowledge to the solution of a problem such as the

development of a new system or procedure, new device, or new method in order to solve

problems. In this type of research, the problem is identified as new system or new method

is applied to solve the problem. On the other hand, experimental type of research is

conducted in this study for it aims to know the potential uses of Citrus Pulverized

Paradisi Seed and Allium Sativum Extract as an Antimicrobial Foot Cream.

Pre-Experimental Design is used to conduct the given study. This design is used

to determine the effectiveness of pulverized Grapefruit Seed and Allium Sativum Extract

in terms of Antimicrobial property and Treating athletes’ foot. This design is the basic

7
form of research design in which involves a single group or multiple groups that are

observed successively to some agent or treatment presumed to cause changes.

In finding the solution to the research problem, the researchers used the

quantitative analysis. It is a technique that seeks to understand behavior by using

mathematical and statistical modeling, measurement, and research. emphasize objective

measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected

through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data

using computational techniques. Quantitative research focuses on gathering numerical

data and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a particular phenomenon.

(Creswell, 2013).

Instrumentation and Data Collection

This study is a non-probability sample that is selected based on the

characteristics of the population and the objective of the study. It is an unbiased

surveying technique. Survey-questionnaire is conducted to gather reliable data, facts and

opinions from the respondents. Purposive sampling is also known as judgmental,

selective, or subjective sampling. This is the most common sampling strategy, useful in

situations when you need to reach a targeted sample quickly, and where sampling for

proportionality is not the main concern.

Tools for Data Analysis

The researchers gathered the data through a survey, Internet, books and other

related studies. From the observation collected in the conducted experiment, it was

tallied, examined and explicated. The data gathered from survey questionnaire are

necessarily needed to acquire and go deeper from the experiences of the respondents that

8
are subjected to data through analysis and interpretations. The pen-and-paper method was

used to enumerate and analyze the answer of the respondents through compare and

contrast method. The 2019 version of Microsoft Word.

Locale and Population of the Study

grapefruit seed. Grapefruit seed was effective against mycelia growth.

Yadav, S., (2015) stated that varying concentrations of fresh garlic extract were

tested for their antimicrobial activity against common pathogenic organisms and has an

important medicinal role for centuries. Its therapeutic uses include beneficial effects on

antimicrobial, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.

The purpose of this research was to study Grapefruit seed (citrus paradisi) and

Garlic (allium sativum) extract as a functional ingredient for tinea pedis. The study used

beeswax; it creates a barrier which helps to seal moisture into the skin. This barrier also

helps to protect the skin from environmental toxins and irritants also a natural exfoliator,

ideal for sloughing away dead skin cells.

16
Reagor, L., (2002) states that Garlic (Allium sativum) extract is one of the best-

researched herbal remedies and is also commonly used for treating various health

problems. Garlic is widely known for its biological properties and plays an important role

as an antioxidant. Garlic extract is considered as a good candidate in the search for an

antimicrobial agent because it has higher antibacterial activity against gram positive

bacteria compared to gram negative bacteria.

Harich, J., (2020) stated that Grapefruit seed is a naturally potent antioxidant

derived from the seeds and pulp. It is used as a natural preservative in a wide range of

cosmetic and skincare products to help stop the growth of harmful microorganisms such

as fungus or bacteria and extend its shelf life.

Gotter, A., (2019) stated that Grapefruit seed extract’s best defense against

candidiasis is its antifungal properties. Grapefruit seed extract have comparable

effectiveness in treating multiple types of bacteria strains as commonly prescribed topical

antibiotics. Athlete’s foot is a topical candida infection affecting moist areas on the feet.

Because of this, topical administration of grapefruit seed extract is best remedy for

treating as such.
