CHAPTER I
PROJECT SCOPE AND STATEMENT

Introduction
Overview of the Project
Lola’s Coffee Co. is planning to create a new line of products from rice.

Purpose of the Project Charter


The purpose of this project charter is:
• to provide an understanding of the project, the reason it is being conducted and its
justification
• to establish early on in the project the general scope
• to establish the project manager and his or her authority level
The final approval will be the CEO of Lola’s Coffee Co.

Project Objective and Scope


Objective
The objective of this project is to research, test and produce coffee products from rice
grains for a month, with enough inventory for the Cavite market.

Scope
The scope of the Lola’s Coffee Co.’s Rice Project includes the activities listed below:
• Determine what variety of rice grains that makes good coffee
• Establish competitive prices of the coffee products
• Source and secure suppliers
• Establish researches, tests and the product samples
This project does not include the:
• Marketing, mass producing, distribution of the product
Major Milestones
• All rice varieties are researched and tested
• Product samples are produced
• Quality and pricing of the product is determined

Major Deliverables
• Procurement of different rice varieties
• Research staffing completed, including work schedules
• Product samples are tested for quality

Assumptions
• Only coffee produced from rice grains will be sampled.
• Lola’s Coffee Co. will manage the project and be responsible for ongoing operations.
• Researchers will arrange the tests and will determine top varieties in producing coffee
from rice grains.

Constraints
• Company staff availability to meet for project planning is limited to business hours.
• Lola’s Coffee Co. will be responsible for any accidents in the project.
• Software is not available for project planning and control.

Business Need or Opportunity


The goal of this project is to provide input in the development of product lines of Lola’s Coffee
Co. The company is searching for other ways to gain income especially in the heritage of
Philippines palette. This will help in forming a research and development sector in the near
future for the company.
Preliminary Cost for the Project
The procurement team will assemble a proposal based on expected costs for review by the CEO
of Lola’s Coffee Co.
