1. What do you mean by noise pollution? What are the causes of noise pollution in modern
life and their adverse effect on human body? What can be done to prevent or minimize the
noise pollution of modern day traffic?

2. A factory uses 3 million litres of fuel oil per month. The exhaust gases from the factory
contain the following quantities of pollutants per million litres per year:-

SO2 = 20 t, Particulate matter = 6.5 t, NOx = 10 t, HC = 1.1 t, CO = – 0.6 t

Determine the safe height of the chimney required for the safe dispersion of the pollutants.

3. What are the various methods of collection of solid waste? Explain the particular method
adopted in your community with demerits and what can be done for the improvements?

4. What is atmosphere? Explain various zones of it by giving the details of temperature

variation and gases present in each zone.

5. The student population of a high school is 881. The school has 30 standard classrooms.
Assuming a 5-day school week with solid waste pickups on Wednesday and Friday before
school starts in the morning, determine the size of storage containers required. Assume
waste generation rate = 0.11 kg/capita/day and 3.6 kg/room, density of waste = 120 kg/m3,
standard containers are 1.5, 2.3, 3.0, and 4.6 m3.

6. Enlist and discuss the Automobile exhaust pollutants from diesel & petrol engines. How
reduction can be carried out?

7. Define and contrast between emission inventory and emission factor. Discuss with a

8. A sanitary landfill is being designed to handle solid waste generated by Chandigarh, at a
rate of 50 Mg/day. It is expected that the waste will be delivered by compactor truck on a
5 days/wk basis. The density as spread is 122 kg/m3. It will be spread in 0.50 meter layers
and compacted to 0.25 meters. Assuming three such lifts per day and a daily cover of
0.15 meters, determine the following :

a) Annual volume of landfill consumed in cubic meters.

b) Daily horizontal area covered by the solid waste. Ignore the soil volume between the
stacks.
