The Focus of This Lesson Is Five Must-Know Dutch Phrases.
The following are five essential phrases that will make the most difference in your studies.
The most useful phrase you should know in Dutch is Hallo which means "hello" (informal) or
goedemorgen ("good morning"). In addition:
goedemiddag means "good afternoon"
goedenavond means "good evening" (formal)
For Example:
1. Hallo, hoe gaat het ermee?
2 "Hello, how are you?"
2. Goedemorgen, hoe gaat het ermee?
"Good morning how are you?"
Show off your manners by saying "thank you," which in Dutch is dankuwel.
For Example:
1. Dankuwel voor het kadoo.
"Thank you for the present."
With these next two expressions, you can ask for or hand someone something, in the same way you'd
say "Please" or "here you are." The word to use is Alstublieft.
For Example:
1. Koffie alstublieft
"Coffee, please."
2. Alstublieft, uw wisselgeld
"Here you are, your change."
A phrase that comes in handy when you have no idea what people are talking about is ik begrijp het
niet, which means "I don't understand."
For Example:
1. Ik begrijp het niet kunt u het herhalen?
"I don't understand, can you repeat?"
3 Another useful Dutch phrase is Pardon which means "sorry" or "excuse me." Being humble and
apologizing when appropriate is another way of showing good manners.
For Example:
1. Pardon mag ik u iets vragen?
"Excuse me can I ask you something?"
2. Oh pardon ik zag u niet staan.
"I'm sorry I didn't see you standing there"
