The science of taxonomy, which classifies plants and animals into ordered system, has
undergone a revolution since the advent of DNA bar-coding in 2003. Whereas
taxonomists traditionally categorized species based on morphological features, DNA
bar-coding analyses a short genetic sequence from a standard part of the genome. In
most animal species, this is a base-pair region in the mitochondrial CO1 gene.
Not only is DNA bar-coding a fast, objective method of identifying plants and
animals, it can be used to identify damage samples as it only requires a small tissue
sample. DNA bar-coding can also identify immature species. Specialist labs can
generate a DNA bar-code in hours for less than US $5, a process that will become
even faster and cheaper once portable DNA bar-coding devices are available.
It is not just natural history collections that can benefit from this technology-there
are numerous potential practical applications to DNA bar-coding. It can protect
consumer by keeping protected fish and lumber off the market. Mosquito’s, of which
there are over 3,500 species, are responsible for up to a million human deaths
annually. Disease control experts can use DNA bar-coding to monitor new species.
This rapidly expanding field has attracted much criticism, not only from those who
see it as oversimplifying traditional taxonomy. Critics points to the fact that the
technology only identifies up to the species level. Furthermore, CO1 sequences do not
reliably identify newly evolved species. The bar-code of life initiative, an international
organization of researchers counter that the technology is a means of quick
identification for non-experts, as well as an additional tool for taxonomist.

Having created a business plan, the first step in setting up an online business is
to find a reliable website host and reserve a suitable domain name. There are
numerous practical factors to consider, including bandwidth and disk space
requirements, and establishing a sufficient level of security in processing
online payments from customers. Depending on what service or product is
being provided, the website need not be technically complex; however, for
maximum impact, it may be helpful to employ a professional web-designer.
