INSTRUCTIONS

Answer all parts of the question.

Your handwriting must be neat and clear.

You can use calculator, graph papers (if required).

Mark is given for each part of question in round brackets ().

Experiment 6: Investigation of Hooke’s law

a) The apparatus has already been setup for you. Ensure that the metre rule is vertical. Explain
with the aid of a diagram how you did that. (3)

The initial length l0 of the spring is measured and is given as:

l0 = 0.070 m

Now hang the mass-hanger (the mass-hanger itself has a mass of 100g or 50g – matching your
slotted masses) and the final length l1 of the spring is measured and is given as:

l1 = 0.082 m

b) Calculate the extension of the spring: (1)

c) Calculate the spring constant/stiffness of the spring: (1)

d) Now you are to repeat the experiment by changing the load with increments of 50g and find
the corresponding extensions. Calculate the extensions. (1)

Mass / kg Initial Length / m Final Length / m Extension / m

0.05 0.070 0.082

0.10 0.070 0.084

0.15 0.070 0.089

0.20 0.070 0.096

0.25 0.070 0.107

0.30 0.070 0.116

0.35 0.070 0.128

e) Use the empty column to process the mass to convert to weights and using your values from
the table plot a graph of Force against Extension on next page. (6)

f) State how the graph can be used to find the spring constant / stiffness of the spring. Calculate
the spring constant/stiffness of the spring from the graph. (3)
