City Hospitals

15th October, 2020

I was directed to visit as many as five hospitals in Kolkata within the
time span of five days in order to see the standards of the hospitals in Kolkata.
Most of the hospitals were double or triple storey buildings with
outdated and dubious infrastructure. The maintenance of the hospitals was
also unsatisfactory. The floors are not cleaned as much as they should be and
the level of sanitation seen in some of the more upscale hospitals is not seen
here. However, in spite of all this the doctors and nurses are extremely well
qualified. Moreover, the machines are also quite up to date and work well. This
leads me to assume the lack of proper maintenance is a mistake on the part of
management and not due to budget restrictions. Due to the high population of
the country there is almost always a long line of patients some of which have
to wait for many hours to get their treatment. There are emergency facilities
present in every hospital. Ambulance services help transport people to the
hospitals. The medical equipment used by the hospital is also extremely
advanced.
The only complaints most patients have is the long waiting line and
the sometimes rude nurses who act unsympathetic. In my opinion the
hospitals are filled with extremely well qualified individuals and the only thing
that should be better is the infrastructure as it is very outdated.
