An Incident at the Market

Madam Rahimah is a housewife. Every week she goes to the market near
her house to buy her groceries for the week. Puan Rahimah usually buys her
things from the same people. She feels that by doing so, she will be able to get
better discounts.

One day, Puan Rahimah went to the market. It was not her usual
marketing day but her family likes to eat fruits and she had run out of them. So,
she went looking for her usual fruit seller, Mr. Muthu. Unfortunately, he was not
there. She had no choice but to go to someone else. She looked around and saw a
stall with a young man selling fruits. He looked honest.

After checking out the fruits, she bought some oranges and bananas from
the young man. Later, she went to a quiet place to check the items. She was
shocked to find that she only got one of the two bananas she bought. Puan
Rahimah was upset because she thought that the man had lied to her.

She went back to the fruit seller and talked to him. She demanded an
explanation from the man. The man looked confused. He told Madam Rahimah
that he did give her both the bananas and asked if she had lost it. Madam
Rahimah was angry now. She started to point her finger at him and said that the
he was not an honest seller.

Just about the same time, ten metres away a young woman came running
with a plastic bag. Inside the bag were the two bananas that Madam Rahimah had
bought. The woman apologised to both the seller and Madam Rahimah, saying
that she had accidentally taken the wrong plastic bag as she had only bought one
banana.

“You have misunderstood this young man, Madam.”

Feeling embarrassed, Madam Rahimah realised her mistake and quickly
said sorry to the fruit seller.

Rainforest World Music Festival

The 20th Rainforest World Music Festival will be taking place on 14-16
July. The event was planned to take place in Sibu but was then changed
to Kuching because many foreigners are expected to come. Last year,
the festival had 16,000 people and it is expecting about 20,000 of
visitors this year.

The Rainforest World Music Festival is a special festival that

brings together famous world musicians from all continents and local
musicians from the hearts of the island of Borneo. What makes it more
special is that we have Belgium Acoustic Band making their first
appearance this year.

The festival has three afternoons of interesting and fun workshops and
mini concerts, followed by evening live performances on the main stage.
These performances have proven to be a hit with the audience, who
come from near and far. On the final night, there will also be a sing-
together session that will be led by an international superstar.

The festival site is set up with a variety of food and drink stalls. We are
no longer serving free juices for visitors but you will be served an ice tea
when you enter. Independent singers will also set up an arts area to
offer their latest music at a cheap price.

The Rainforest World Music Festival is a not-to-be-missed occasion. This

will give everyone a great time in the heart of the Borneo Jungle.

My best friend

Friends are important to us. We do not need too many friends but a few great
friends makes a huge difference in our lives. I have such a good friend in my life. Her
name is Lily and we go to the same school. Although we are the same age, we do not
learn in the same class. Her class is one floor below mine because we have different
interests in studies. I love science and she loves history.

Lily has a good sense of humour. She always makes me smile when I am down.
She sometimes makes jokes that I can laugh so hard my stomach hurts. She is the most
hardworking person I know and she is never selfish in sharing what she knows. Her
knowledge in world history is amazing. She dreams to become a history journalist one
day.

Lily and I live in the same neighbourhood. Every morning, we take the school
bus together to go to school. Sometimes, my mother would make two packed meals to
give one to Lily. We would eat together during the school break. I can eat a lot. So
when Lily cannot finish her meal I would be the first to take her food. She always jokes
that I might become a teddy bear if I keep eating so much.

Another reason Lily and I become so close is because we share the same love
for netball. We both play for the school netball team and we train three times a week
after school. Lily is recently chosen as the team captain. Coach likes that she is a fair
person. One time I was late for training, she made me run five rounds around the court
as punishment even though we are close friends. Besides, she trains hard and always
communicate with us during games.

I am grateful because I have a good friend. Lily has been like a sister to me. I
cannot imagine my life without her.

My school had a new volleyball coach and I attended their training recently.

On my first day of training, our coach talked about the sport and its rules. We
were divided into two teams. 35| Between us, there was a net about a few metres
high. Each team tried to score points by trying to get the ball to touch the floor in the
opponents’ court. We played hard but it was obvious we needed more training.

I enjoyed the first day of training and it was great working out with other team
members. Coach Jackson even spoke to me personally. 36| He also said that my
height would definitely be an advantage in this sport. He wanted me to give it a shot
in the school volleyball team. 37|

I have talked to my parents about this and they encourage me to go for it. My
mother thinks this could be a great opportunity to gain new experience and make
new friends. 38| I want to see how far I can go with this. Plus, I have always been a

fan of sports. 39| I might not have enough time for my homework and revision
once I start training with the group.

Instead of giving up, I spent some time doing research on how to manage my
time better. I found out my answers. 40| And if I follow my timetable and do
things the right way, I will be fine. I think this will be a good experience for me.

Report on English Language Camp

During the English Language Camp, the English Language society of

SMK Wawasan had organised a series of activities. The team members did the
planning from 10th – 12th January while the camping activity was held from 21st
to 23rd February. Most activities were carried out at Damai Hall near our school
because we did not have our own hall.

Mr. Sivajanam started the idea of this language camp along with a few
English teachers of the school. However, it was the form 6 students who did
everything. Many thought that the camp aimed to teach students some exam
answering techniques. That was not why we did it. In fact, it was to encourage
the use of English language among the 50 students who took part in the event.

The activities carried out were public speaking, drama performance, and
singing contest. The winners received book vouchers as prize while all
members got a certificate and a group photo.

Overall, it was a successful camp and everyone was happy. All photos
from the camping activity was uploaded to the school’s website by Mr. Jasli.
Students who had not gotten your certificate and group photo, please call Miss
Jane at 0162330909. We also want to thank Mr. Raj for paying for all the food
for students during the language camp. See you again next year!

PLASTIC BOTTLES

Plastic bottles are everywhere now. It has become so convenient

that people would just buy and throw away when they finish using them. As
a result, we see so many plastics bottles piling up at the dump site or
floating around in the sea. This is why plastic pollution happens.

Over the years, many have suggested that we should reuse our
empty bottles and turn them into handicrafts and useful items at home. like
candle holder and flower holder. Some even make lamps and purses.
Many even make them so beautiful that they give them as gifts to their
family and friends. You can also sell them to make money.

Many schools also turn plastic bottles into beautiful decorations

around their gardens and gates. This not only makes their schools
beautiful, but it teaches our children the importance of taking care of our
Earth.

Another thing we can do is to collect plastic bottles and send them

to the recyling centre. When the recycling centres receive our bottles, it will
then send them to the factory to be recycled. These recycled bottles can be
made into clothes and carpets.

Although plastic bottles can be reused, made into beautiful items or

even be recycled, the number of these bottles are still too high. Many still
end up in the rubbish sites and they will take hundreds of years to
diappear.

To deal with the problem, many are suggesting that we should

refuse using plastic bottles in the first place. If we do not buy plastic bottles,
the factories will not make so many of them. This can help reduce the
number of plastic bottles being thrown away.

Therefore, every time before you go out from home, we encourage

you to bring your own reusable water bottle so you do not need to buy from
the store. Try to encourage your friends and family to do the same too.
Together, we can save the world.

Questions 35 - 40
You are going to read a newspaper article about smoothie.
Six sentences have been removed form the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit
each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.

How to make the perfect smoothie

Start your smoothie with two mugs full of a liquid base. This can be milk,
or a dairy-free liquid such as soya or almond milk, natural or flavoured yogurt,
fruit juice, or coconut water. 35| This will prevent the blender from getting
damaged.

Next add about three quarters of a mug of your chosen fruit. 36| It will
give you a lovely taste. You may have to add more fruit or liquid, depending on
the type of fruit you choose. Add a squeeze of honey or maple syrup if your
smoothie needs it. Finally, add a few ice cubes to the blender for a thick and
frosty smoothie.

If you want to make smoothies regularly, it's a great idea to put some
fruits in the freezer. Not only will they keep their nutritional value and flavour,
they will instantly chill your smoothie. 37|

Before your bananas have a chance to turn brown in the fruit bowl, peel
and slice them, then freeze on a sheet of baking paper on a tray until solid. 38|
Just make sure you write the date on the bags so you know how long
it’s been in the freezer. When you want to make a smoothie, you can throw
them into your blender whenever you need them.

Even fruits that don't usually freeze well, like strawberries and melon, are
okay to freeze if you're using them in a smoothie. 39| These are often cheap
and great for people who have no time. They also give you a good mixture of
fruit.

If you're having a smoothie for breakfast or lunch, make it a more

complete meal by adding some protein for more energy. 40| Start making
your smooothie today.

Dear Pamela,

On 28th December, I arrived in Manchester. I know I told you I wanted to

go to London but I found that Manchester is better for me to study. On the 25th
December, My family organised a good-bye party with all family members and
friends. We had a great time. Pamela, I wish you were there!

Now that I am here in the UK for almost a month, I still find the weather
too cold. I finally understand why people say that you can actually feel sad
when it is really cold. On my first few days, I had a flu and bad fever. I had to
visit the doctor. Since I have not registered with the National Health Service
(NHS), it cost me RM250 for just one doctor visit! If this was in Malaysia, I might
only have to pay about RM50.

Back home we always get about 12 hours of sunlight right? During winter,
we only have about 8 hours of daylight here. By 5 o’clock in the evening, the
sky is all dark and black. The weather is so cold that I have to eat more food
and wear more clothes to feel warmer. However, I am worried that I will gain
weight because of how much food I eat. So I have joined a gym and go there
every two days to stay fit. Also, I have made some new friends who are kind to
give me tips on staying warm.

However, I really look forward to having my first snow experience. The first
snow is expected to fall any time now. I also look forward to going ice-skating
with some of my friends here during our one-week break.

I hope you are doing well there Pam. I will write to you again when I have
time.

Your friend,
Sheila

Ways to Prevent Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is still a serious problem in Malaysia. The number of victims

increases from year to year and it has taken away many Malaysian lives. We
must take important steps to prevent this disease.

There are many ways to prevent dengue fever. First, we must clean our
houses and surrounding areas at least once a week. Any water that is not moving
should be removed. We all need to check our flowerpots and pails around our
house. Turn them up side down so that they do not collect rainwater and become
the perfect place for dengue mosquitoes. For houses with fountain, having some
guppy fishes get rid of the mosquito eggs in the water.

The other way to prevent dengue fever is to use mosquito repellent. This is
important especially if we have outdoor activities early in the morning and late
evening. Dengue mosquitoes are active during sunrise and sunsets. Some people
like to go jungle trekking or hiking during these times. That makes them the easy
target for dengue mosquitoes. That is why we need to use mosquitoe repellent
spray before going out.

Another helpful way to prevent dengue fever is to sleep under mosquito

nets if necessary. Remember to get rid of the mosquitoes under the mosquito
nets before we sleep. We can also install mosquito nets in all our windows to
prevent the mosquitoes from entering our homes.

With all the steps done properly, there is sill a possibility that we may suffer
from dengue fever. If we have high fever, red spots on the hands, legs and body,
headache, and redness of the eyes, we must seek medical advice immediately.

You are going to read a newspaper article about glamping.

each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.

WHAT IS GLAMPING?

Recently, a global trend that offers outdoor lovers an upgrade on rest and
relaxation has caught fire. It's called glamping, a new word for a new kind of travel.
The word ‘glamping’ comes from ‘glamorous camping’. 35|

Glamping is a way to experience the great outdoors without losing luxury.

When you're glamping, you do not have to go through a lot of hardwork. 36|
All you do is to arrive at the destination and enjoy yourself with your friends and
family.

37| Many companies have made a lot of money because more people
want to experience the benefits of camping without feeling uncomfotable. Glamping
focuses on the complete comfort of the guests. 38| Of course, this would also
mean that you will have to prepare more money to go glamping.

The search volume for the keyword “glamping” shows that glamping is
growing Just a few years ago, online users were rarely doing searches for
“glamping.” 39| Today, several million searches are done every year. It is
believed that the number will continue to grow higher in years to come.

Glamping also allows you to go beyond the tourist path and enjoy local

Subject: Holiday!

I just came back from a holiday with my family last Friday. I thought my best
holiday was in Melaka but this was a lot more fun. My whole family took a flight to
George Town, Penang from Kuala Lumpur. We stayed at a hotel on Armenian Street,
next to Acheh road, from 13 to 16 August.

This trip was all about food. On our first day, we went to look for my brother’s
favourite food – Char Kuey Teow and Penang Laksa. Although I enjoyed the curry
noodle, I still think Penang Laksa was my top pick. It was delicious.

One food I did not enjoy much was the fried oyster with egg. I did not like the
taste of the oyster but my mother absolutely loved it. However, if there was one thing
that my whole family like, that would be cendol. When we got there, there was a long
line. We thought it would take us 30 minutes but it only took us 10 minutes to get our
order.

We also did not miss the opportunity to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We rented some bicycles and together we cycled around the town to look for every
street art. There were many cars on the street so we had to be extremely careful.

Jamil, you need to come visit 3D art museum because you love art so much and I
was surprised by how cool it was. I know you do not like key chains so I bought you an
art book. Give it to you when I see you!

National Service Programme and I

Taking part in the National Service Programme was one of my best decisions. I joined
the National Service Programme last month in Tawau for 3 months and I’ve learned so
much from it.

First of all, it helped me develop good habits such as waking up and sleeping
early. At home, I could always sleep late and wake up anytime I want. But in the camp,
we had to follow the rules set by the officers and shut the lights by 10 p.m. At first, I did
not like it but now I think it is a good habit for me. Now, I always try to sleep before 12
a.m. to make sure I get up early in the morning.

By joining the National Service Programme, we made new friends who come
from different races and states in Malaysia. I got to know some new friends from
Selangor and they shared their lives in west Malaysia with us. Hearing the stories, I
could see that there is so much difference among us even though we live in the same
country. Because of that, I learned to respect people with different cultures.

The programme taught me about responsibility. Under the National Service

Programme, every individual is the same. If we did something wrong, we would be
given a fair punishment. If we did something good, we would be given good words or
even prize. Therefore, we have to think carefully before taking any actions. I find it
useful to use in my daily life.

In additions, there are many exciting activities in the National Service

Programme such as jungle trekking and cooking in the jungle with very few utensils and
food provided. We learn to work in teams and help each other solve problems. We
learn to set up camp, group patrol at night and cleaning a dorm together. On top of
everything, I think what I like most is all the love I felt from everyone I met in the camp.

Part 5
Questions 35 - 40
You are going to read an article about a school event.
Six sentences have been removed form the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit
each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.

Last Monday, our school SMK Kemaman had organised a Sing and
Dance event. 35| In the morning, everyone gathered in our new school hall
and our headmaster, Mr. Vivek gave an exciting speech.

The first activity of the day was the singing contest. All individuals were
really talented. Izzah from my class was one of the singers. 36| To
support her, all of us voted for her.

However, Nelson from another class was Izzah’s biggest competition.

After counting all the votes, she lost to him by just five votes. 37|

Since this was a Sing and Dance event, we could not miss out the
dancing competition. This competition had a twist this year. 38| It was fun to
watch some of the dancers dancing hip-hop in traditional costumes.

However, I must say that some of the dancing teams were really
creative. Everyone cheered for their hard work and talent. After the results
were announced, the winner was a dancing team from 5 Unggu. They
received their trophy joyfully from the head of co-curriculum, Mrs. Lee.

39| Everyone seemed very happy with the event and had a lot of
good words for it. I hope it will be the same next year.

Event like this was useful to all students as we learnt how to work as a
team with our group members. People who had singing and dancing talents
also got a chance to show what they could. 40|

I think learning from experience is extremely important. It helps us grow

as a person. We will remember it for the rest of our lives.
