Facing dire budget predictions, many school

districts are moving to a four-day week. Of nearly
15,000-plus districts nationwide, more than 100
in at least 17 states have moved to the four-day
system. Suppose that you are employed by a
school district in San Antonio, Texas, that is going
to move to a four-day week by the start of the
next school year. What type of planning would
need to be done as your school district embarked
on this process? Identify three or four primary
goals for accomplishing this action. Then, describe
what plans would be needed to ensure that those
goals are met.

Moving to a four-day schedule is a far more
complex intervention than shifting bus routes,
however. When a community shifts its school
schedule, it affects parents, teachers, classified
staff, and local businesses. The schedule change
affects students most of all, and different
students react in different ways.

What begins as a way to save money often

becomes a complex problem that has no clear
theory of action to guide ongoing planning and
assessment. However, some districts begin
implementing a four-day school week with clear
and realistic goals for what they are trying to
achieve and with structures in place to assess
results. Some districts have the resources to
ensure the stability of new programs for the day
that no longer has regular instruction—the “fifth
day.”

Using Breadth Planning, I had lined up goals which

are aligned with the strategic and operational
plans. I use this type of planning to better address
and ensure that this transition will be beneficial to
the school district strategically-speaking and will
not compromise its operations and the quality of
education as well as its overall performance.

To provide students with more

learning opportunities.

Some districts use the fifth day for additional programming

to enrich student learning. These programs are generally
voluntary and provided by community partners, teachers, or
parents. Depending on the district and resources available,
they may include arts activities, vocational/technical
training, or field trips.

FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 11

PLAN #1
20XX

Organize an orientation for all teachers, parents, students, and other

faculty staff to inform them about the new system that will be
implemented.

This is to make sure that everyone is fully

aware of what was happening so as to avoid
confusion. This will communicate important
policy and culture information to everyone
that will be involved.

FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 12

PLAN #2
20XX

Modify lesson plans from a five-day planned lectures to a four-day

plan.

Since the schedule of school days will be

changed, the lesson plan for students should
also be adjusted too. The school must make
sure that this adjustment will not
compromise the schools’ quality of work.

FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 13

PLAN #3
20XX

Develop alternate scheduling for teachers and other faculty

members.

To avoid overlapping and squeezing too much

in a day to cope up with the four-day school
week, the school must develop a schedule
that is efficient. In this way, teachers and
other faculty members will be well
distributed.

FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 14

PLAN #4
20XX

Turn off computers or other appliances within the school buildings which will
not be used for the meantime. The HR can also investigate their staffing if
they can lay off some redundant faculty members.

This is a direct move intended to lower the

organizational costs in the form of utilities and
compensations. A district has to make tough
decisions if it wants to save money, even with a
four-day schedule. They must cut the salaries and
benefits of classified workers and limit the use of
school resources and buildings on the fifth day.

FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 15

PLAN #5
20XX

Incorporate interactive digital learning.

The school district can use our current technology

to make sure the students’ learning outcomes or
interest will not be negatively impacted by the
transition. Given that the youth is much more
inclined with technology-based learning, this will
keep their interest and make the class discussions
more interesting. This will also make it easier for
teachers to track performances.

FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 16

PLAN #6
20XX

Carefully consider which day will be your fifth day and use it
effectively

The school district should adjust the schedule on a week by-

week basis. When a holiday falls on a Monday, for example,
the district will not take Friday off. Other districts choose the
day that coincides with the most absences. I would
recommend having Wednesday (midweek) to avoid problems
associated with the three-day weekend. The “fifth day” should
also offer more learning opportunities for teachers and
students that they have the option to take if it interests
them.
FOUR DAY SYSTEM PLAN 17
CONCLUSION 20XX

But the four-day school week is not for everyone. There are so many things the
school district needs to consider before implementing it. And since, in this case I
suppose that I was being employed by a school district in San Antonio, Texas that
will be transitioning to the said scheme by the start of the next school year, I need
to make sure that they are indeed prepared for it. To determine whether the
four-day school week is a best fit to the school district, they must consider several
factors like program design, program organization, and service delivery as well as
if this scheme will work best for their type of students and whether their
community, the parents, and their school resources will align with this and their
goals.
