1. What is the difference between an SCR and a TRIAC ?

2. Define latching current of thyristors.

3. Why is the power factor of semi converter better than full converter ?

4. What is the effect of source inductance on rectifiers ?

5. What is the principle of operation of a step-up converter ?

6. Draw the simple circuit of a impulse commutated chopper.

7. Compare VSI with CSI.

8. Why feedback diodes are required in inverters feeding inductive load ?

9. List the merits and demerits of ON-OFF control.

10. What are the applications of cycloconverters ?

11. a) i) Differentiate BJT and MOSFET. (4)


ii) Explain the construction, principle of operation and static characteristics of

12. a) With a aid of a neat power circuit diagram explain the operation of a three phase
controlled bridge rectifier with RL load using necessary waveforms. Derive an
expression for its output dc voltage. (16)

b) A single phase full converter is connected to ac supply of 330 sin 314 t volt and

50 Hz. It operates with a firing angle of α = rad. The total load current is

maintained constant at 5A and the load voltage 140 V. Calculate the source
inductance, angle of overlap and the load resistance. (16)

13. a) Draw the circuit diagram of load-commutated chopper and explain its operation
with relevant waveforms at various stages. (16)

b) Explain the operation of current commutated chopper with circuit diagram and
relevant waveforms at various stages. (16)

14. a) Discuss the operation of three phase voltage source inverter in 120 degree
operating mode.

b) Explain how an inverter is controlled using single PWM and sinusoidal PWM.
Also discuss the merits and demerits of both techniques.

15. a) i) Explain the principle of on-off control in a single-phase full wave AC controller
supplying a resistive load. (4)
ii) A 1 – φ full wave ac voltage controller supplies a R load. Derive an expression
for the RMS value of the output voltage and supply p.f. Also sketch the
waveforms of source current, device current and load current. (12)

b) i) Draw the circuit diagram and explain the principle of operation of a single
phase to single phase cycloconverter supplying a resistive load. (8)
ii) Explain the working of a three phase to single phase cycloconverter to produce
output voltage with a frequency of 12 Hz. (8)
