Final Rehearsal
Age/Grade Level: 4th and 5th grade choir

Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Objective: To stretch and energize the body, open up the diaphragm and loosen any tension.
1. Spinal Stretch (interlock fingers, stretch out arms slowly with palms towards you, bring
thumbs down so palms face outwards, slowly bring arms up and over the head. Repeat
a couple times)
2. Left-right shake (Shake one full side of the body i.e. left arm, left hand, left foot, left
leg, then switch)

Objective: To develop efficient breathing, to prepare for held note in part 2 of Kuwa Furaha.
3. Breathing – Slow Leak (students exhale, inhale through nose and then exhale on ‘ss’
slowly. Teacher directs students to keep their diaphragm open and ribs extended for as
long as possible, giving the body plenty of space to breathe. Teacher counts and
students ‘ss’ for as long as they can. Once they’re out of breath, they sit down. Longest
standing is the winner.)

Objective: To develop in-tune singing in harmony and to prepare for harmonies in Chairs to
Mend and Kuwa Furaha.
4. Sing up and down the extended scale on solfa (F is d, starting on d and going up to d’
then down to s, and back to d).
5. Two-part singing, stopping and sustaining solfa (f and r, f and s, f and l, f and d, f and
s,)
Chairs to Mend – Round (5 minutes)
Objective: To improve diction and expression.
1. Sing through Chairs to Mend
2. Improve diction (old, mend). Circle all the olds and all the mends. Be sure to sing the
d.
3. Improve vowels (Chairs -> ah sound, light r, soft ah for mAckerel and rAgs, soft r in
mackeRel)
4. Improve phrasing (rainbow gesture on each long phrase). Think of voice carrying up
into the second level of houses and down the street.
5. Sing in two-part canon.
Kuwa Furaha (10 minutes)
Objective: To learn the rhythm, melody and harmony of the recurring A section of Kuwa
Furaha.
1. Echo speak in rhythm on shh last two measures of first ending.
2. Speak in rhythm together on shh while keeping the beat.
3. Sing solfa altogether.
4. Echo speak in rhythm on shh page 2 part 2 while keeping the beat.
5. Speak in rhythm together on shh while keeping the beat.
6. Sing the solfa, parts split & sing together on the last two measures.
7. Echo speak in rhythm on shh page 2 part 1 while keeping the beat.
8. Speak in rhythm together on shh while keeping the beat.
9. Sing the solfa, parts split & sing together on the last two measures.
