ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Activity

1. What is the difference between “earthquake proof” and “earthquake resilient”?

 Earthquake proof is the design which building able to withstand and will not shattered
during earthquakes. Loads or forces are distributed to minimized damage and injuries
on both building and humans while earthquake resilient often referred to as ‘low
damage design’ or ‘damage avoidance design’ because it enables buildings to respond
to significant seismic events, without causing irreparable damage to primary structural
elements. The design process is aimed at minimizing the level of seismic damage to
structures; so that buildings may be rapidly reinstated for their purpose after a major
earthquake.

2. Connection to the First question, do we say “earthquake-proof buildings” or “earthquake-

resilient buildings”, explain your answer.
 We can say Earthquake-resilient building because based on the number 1, earthquake
can affect structures in a minimal damage and able to recover after shake which is more
genuine than earthquake proof.

3. As a future Civil Engineer, how can you make sure your building can deal minimum damage to
earthquakes?
 As a future Civil Engineer, three things to be consider to ensure the strength and low
damage from earthquakes.
i. Responsible to its profession/workplace. One of the responsible assigned to us
or the nature of our work is to check, to inspect and to visit daily or the ongoing
site projects but some engineers cannot check daily rather often times which can
result to shattered structures. So, we need to be more responsive to our work to
make sure that structure we make are resilient.
ii. Demand for High Quality. Using high quality materials for construction is highly
assured for minimum damage from earthquake and other natural disaster.
iii. Resilient Structure Design. With the innovation and integration of technology in
the field many engineers are designing structures such as bridges, buildings and
roads with earthquake-resilient structure and design which minimize the effect of
ground shaking in the structure. For example, the Philippine Arena which they
integrate seismic resisting system to protect both upper-lower roof and column.
