Final Exam Review
Pattern:
1. You have to review the design of a cantilever concrete retaining wall designed for
a clear height of 18 ft and soils as shown in the figure. Ignore the effect of passive
earth pressure at the toe of retaining wall. Please check the design and provide
your recommendation for the following situation:
Sandy backfill with φ’ = 340 and γd = 120 pcf.
Clayey base soil with Cu = Ca =1.4 ksf and γd = 115 pcf.
Bearing capacity of the soil = 10 ksf
2
2. You have to review the design of a cantilevered concrete retaining wall presented
in the following figure. Ignore the effect of passive earth pressure at the toe of
retaining wall. Please consider the effect of surcharge. Please check the design
and provide your recommendation. Bearing capacity of the soil, according to the
soil report is 8 ksf.
5
a. Calculate Dtheotetical, Ddesign for 30% increment, and Length of sheet pile.
b. Maximum Bending moment (Mmax) (theoretical)
8
4. Shown in the following figure is a sheet pile section having backfill as a granular
soil and penetrating in a clayey soil.
a. Calculate Dtheotetical, Ddesign for 40% increment, and Length of sheet pile
5. A section of proposed sheet pile is shown in the following figure. Please prepare the pressure
diagram required for the design of the sheet pile. Calculate the depth of embedment D of
sheet pile. Also calculate the force F at tie rod.
6. You are required to design a total height of sheet pile system for the following
topographic condition and make a complete pressure diagram that helps to
estimate the maximum moment required for the design of sheet pile. Please
perform necessary calculations for that and present your results neatly.
= 300 psf

7. For a cantilever retaining wall shown in the figure below, following data is given.
Please calculate the factor of safety with respect to over-turning, sliding and
bearing capacity. Take adhesion = 2/3 of c’ and δ = 2/3 φ; γconc = 150 pcf. Ignore
the passive earth pressure.
