Lesson title: Shapes (Content related to Grade 3-4)

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
 differentiate flat and solid shape.
 identify polygon based on the given defining points.
PRE -ASSESSMENT:
 Identify prior knowledge
 Assess whether or not the learner can already accomplish outcome
DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK/ACTIVITY TOOLS/RESOURCES
Activity 1 (Time allocated: 2 minutes)
Teacher will pose the given questions to the whole class. Can you tell Variety of 3D and 2D
the names of some shapes around you? Teacher will show students’ shapes
responses on the board and give immediate feedback on them.
PARTICIPATORY LEARNING ACTIVITIES
The body of the lesson, where learners are involved as actively in the learning process as possible.
There is an intentional sequence of activities or learning events that will help the learner achieve
the specified objective or desired outcome
DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK/ACTIVITY TOOLS/RESOURCES
Activity 2 (Time allocated: 5 minutes)
Teacher will then separate all the 2D shapes from three 3 D shapes. Various 3D and 2D
And pose the following question to the whole class. shapes
What did I consider when I split the shapes into two groups?

Teacher will prompt the students and give immediate feedback to

students.

Teacher will conclude the activity with the following explanation:

One group contain all flat shapes without any raised portion. (Teacher
will use everyday vocabulary to explain the word “flat”, for example,
you can stick any of flat shape on the wall, there will be no portion of
it which comes out of wall. All the non-flat shapes are called “solid”
shapes. Other details (if requires)
Note: Teacher will decide if it is appropriate to use the term 2D or 3 D
at this point. Otherwise, calling 2D shape as flat and 3 D as Solid is
fine at this level.

Activity 3 (Time allocated: 8 min)

Teacher will display the following points and explain each of the Worksheet: Exploring
points with examples. Shapes
1. It is flat.
2. It has three or more straight line.
3. It is closed, all lines are connected and there is no gap between
them.
4. It does not have any curve.
Teacher will give a sheet with title Exploring Shape (as given on the
next column) and ask students to select the shapes which have all the
above points. (student will do this activity in group of four or five.)
Student will display their work and show the shapes which have all
the above points. Teacher will explain that:

The selected shape is called “Poly-gon” (Poly means many and gon
means side). Polygon means multi-sided picture.
Other details (if requires)
Note: The teacher will Not engage students in discussion whether
Circle is polygon or not.
Activity 4 (Time allocated: 5 min)
Teacher will ask students, sitting in the same group, to separate the Table: Names of
shapes identified as ‘polygons’ on the basis of the number of sides Polygons
they have. Teacher will ask students to give a name to these polygon
using the following table. Geoboard/ GeoGebra

Teacher will monitor students work and ask each group to present
their work .
Teacher may also ask students to make the above shape
using Geoboard or Geogebra software.
(Note: Teachers are advised to make low cost geoboard or download
free and open software geogbra if they have access to computer and
internet)
Activity 5 (Time allocated: 4 min)
Teacher will ask students to observe different shapes having the same
name and share their observation with the students in the group.
Teacher will ask students in each group to present their work.
Teacher willconclude the activity with the following explanation.
There are two types of polygons, Regular and Irregular.
Regular polygon has all sides of equal length.
Irregular polygon has sides of different length.
POST-ASSESSMENT
 Identify what children learnt
 Assess whether or not learning outcomes are accomplished
Activity 6 (Time allocated: 4 min)
Peer Assessment:
Teacher will ask students to work in groups. Each one will draw four
different shapes (teacher will encourge students to be innovative) and
ask their group members to tell:
 If the shape is polygon?
 if it is a polygon what is its name?
 If it is regular polygon or irregular polygon
CONCLUSION
Activity 7 (Time allocated: 4 min)
Teacher will ask each group to share one interesting point or shape
which was discussed in their group.
Teacher may initiate the discussion if circle is a polygon or not.
Teacher will explain:
Although a circle has curve so it cannot be considered polygon
according to the definition. However, if you keep on increasing the
sides of a polygon, it will look like a circle. Therefore, many
mathematians have considered it as ‘many sided polygon’.
This can be shown on geoboard or Geogbra software.
