DEHYDRATATION
REACTOR FOR 124,2 KTPY DME
PRODUCTION PREP. BY: L. BARBAGALLO
1. INTRODUCTION
The scope of this specification is to point out the main features of designing the dehydratation reactor R-201 for methanol
to produce dimethyl ether DME. Dimethyl ether is a compound that has had a high added value for many years in the
field of fuels and above all, in the field of chemical additives to fuels such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Both for its
ability to increase the value of octane and cetane and for its great ability to improve combustion. DME, Dimethyl Ether,
is the simplest non-toxic colorless gaseous ether. It is also known as wood ether, methyl ether and dimethyl oxide. DME
has the Formula CH3OCH3 which is considered as the suitable precursor to other organic compounds.
It has many Features that makes it more profitable among other organic compounds on of which is that It can be derived
from many sources some of which are considered as renewable. Biomass (waste and agricultural products), natural gas
and cool are the most known renewable sources used for the DME production. It is accounted as a clean source of energy
since it doesn’t generate sulfur oxides or smut during combustion. In addition, it is liquefied easily when lightly
pressurized which makes it more profitable. Due to the properties’ similarity between DME, butane and propane, LPG
processing technology is applied to DME.
DME has been produced by a process called the dehydration of methanol over a solid-based acidic catalyst. Water
molecule is removed from every two methanol molecules which results in the formation of DME. Regarding operations
done, crude methanol is fed to the stream (mostly not 100% pure) then sent through a pump to more than one heat
exchanger to gain the adequate temperature for the reaction. Then reactants are fed to a fixed bed reactor (or backed bed)
with a suitable catalyst to form dimethyl ether. Due to the exothermic mode of the reaction, the effluent has to be cooled
before separation of DME. In the first distillation column, DME is separated, as a distillate, from other components.
Another distillation column is used to separate unreacted methanol, because conversion is not 100%, which will be sent
back as a fresh feed to the process through a recycle stream.

REACTOR FOR 124,2 KTPY DME
PRODUCTION PREP. BY: L. BARBAGALLO
Pressure: 13 – 18 Barg
Types of reactor: Fixed BED and Cooled Multitubular Packed Bed Reactor or Exchanger Reactor (MPBR).
As follows is shown a block diagram that points out battery limit (in red blanketing line) in to scope of the design:
DME STORAGE
Fresh MEOH is stored and buffered in a vessel V – 201 that feeds two pumps P – 201 A/B, where B is spare part pump.
These two pumps feed MEOH in two staged preheaters E – 201 and E – 202, designed for increasing optimal operating
temperature for inlet Reactor R – 201.
E – 201 raises temperature from 40 °C up to 150 °C and second preheater E – 202 must increase temperature of the fluids
inlet the reactor R – 201, up to 250 °C. First preheaters is fed with MP steam at 12 barg and 200 °C.
Second preheater E – 202 is to be considered useful introducing feed that will be heat in counter – current with outlet
products for the same reactor.

REACTOR FOR 124,2 KTPY DME
PRODUCTION PREP. BY: L. BARBAGALLO
The reactor R – 201 converts process fluids at 80 – 85 % max in DME and water, as by – product of the reaction, with an
increase of temperature up to 366 °C, this excess of heat will be keep just constant with a cooling medium, in this case
BFWS at 18 °C with a return from the reactor of outlet BRWR of 91°C. The stream products exit from the reactor go to
the preheater, as said behind, E – 202 as hot medium for heating the feed to the reactor R – 201, at the same time product
will be cooled and depressurized with a piping system of throttling valves system and pressure self - automated reducing
valves, needed to reducing it for separation step, that do not belong in this scope of work.
124,2 KTPY = 124000000 Kg/y * (1 year/365 days) = 340273,97 Kg/d * (1 day/24 h) = 14178 Kg/h
From recycling step only 100,97 Kmol/h will be recovered about 7 Kmol/h will be lost in wastewater due to separation
of water/MEOH is difficult to occur at 100%.

Considering that stream 8 is cooled just at 290 °C, but for a major safety of the process, cooling water or BFW must be
sizing considering if system reacting is not quasi – isothermally started – up, but in adiabatic way.
P = 4 barg
WWATER = 23404,9 Kg/h needed to cool reactor from 367 °C up to 290,2 °C about.
The design of the reactor R – 201 is being realized with support of Polymath software and Aspen Hysys V10.1 :
