“A Study on Performance Evaluation of Information
Technology Professionals and Working Environment with
reference to selected companies of Mindspace, SEZ, Airoli”

(I) Introduction

In this digital era, where every natural process happens at a click of a button on a web site or a

smartphone application, information technology forms the linchpin of the digital epoch. Without

the boom of information technology, the concept of e-commerce and digital payments etc. would

never have had been evolved. Information Technology [IT] refers to the study, design,

development, deployment, management or support of computer based information systems

usually computer or smartphone software applications and computer hardware. Several

companies in the IT field employ the software as a service model. Software as a Service or SaaS

is a technical concept in which the software is supplied to users on a subscription basis by

certifying it to the user for a fixed duration of time for a set sum of money. The software is

centrally hosted by the company. Some of the companies like Accenture, Capgemini, Wipro,

L&T Infotech, Microsoft and Google are utilizing the software as a service model.

Each organization adopts a special social system which aids in efficient allocation of tasks and

delegation of authority. Most of the IT companies are using project based organization structure

in which the jobs are administered according to the project requirements of the client. Each

project usually has a project manager, associate manager and staff involved in it. A particular

project can include multiple teams in it. Teams include development team, testing team,

integration team, business configuration team and product configuration team etc.
The working environment is an umbrella concept which refers to the broad range of factors

which directly or indirectly affects the working capability of the employees and their

commitment towards work. Employees in an organization includes males, females, Persons with

Disability (PwD) employees and the type of working environment required for each category

differs. Employee performance depends on a number of elements which include the recognition

system followed by the organization, the organization’s environment, organization’s policies and

competition persistent within an organization etc. The organization always strives to provide a

conducive environment for its employees so that they can exhibit their extraordinary talent which

ultimately helps the organization to achieve extraordinary success within time frame. When the

employees are exposed to harsh working conditions, then surely the commitment level of the

employees drops down and suitable working conditions is one of the key ingredients responsible

for the employee to prove his dedication / sincerity towards work. The various factors involved

in reduction of employees commitment towards work are listed as under:

1. Hierarchy level followed in the Organization.

2. Improper office environments.

3. Lack of proper recognition systems for employees.

4. Favoritism and discrimination followed within the Organization.

5. Improper hike or promotion systems in the organization.

6. Demotivation and under-valuion of employees work.

7. Underpayment to employees.

8. Misconduct of Senior Management towards staff and

9. Unfavorable working environment for women.

Airoli is centrally located place in the Navi Mumbai division of Maharashtra state which is

equipped with commercial and residential developments. Airoli has good connectivity to

different cities by road as well as railway due to which the city housed the Mindspace, an IT

Special Economic Zone campus which is spread over 4.3 million sq. ft. of area which is

developed by Raheja Group. Mindspace is one of the most prominent area which attracted the

Fortune 500 companies to set up their establishments in Mindspace which includes companies

like Accenture, L&T Infotech, Capgemini, eClerx, Gebbs Healthcare Solutions, and Wipro, etc.

The companies settled in the Mindspace area are generating employment opportunities for lakhs

of employees. In such companies it is of foremost importance that the employees put their 100

percent effort which would result in progress as well as development of the company.

When the employees working in an organization are satisfied with the work they do and also are

satisfied with the organization, then that employee will surely be committed to his work. The

above cited factors are the major elements which causes dissatisfaction in the employees minds

regarding their purpose and existence in an organization.

(II) Significance and Importance of the Study:

IT Industry is one of the most important industrial sectors which contributes to the Indian

economy. After the transformation of the Indian economic system from the agriculture based

economy to service sector based economy, IT industry forms the center of the service sector

providing employment to millions of workers across the nation.

Special Economic Zones (SEZ) is an important economic concept launched by the Government

of India, which boosted Indian exports from 5 percent of exports in the year 2000 to 26 percent

exports in 2014 and employment rate from 0.2 percent in year 2000 to 4.2 percent in the year
2014 In monetary terms SEZ has boosted the exports from Rs 22,000 crores in 2005-06 to

around Rs 5 lakh crores in 2014-15. The employment rate increased from 3.3 lakh people in

fiscal year 2008 to 16.8 lakh people in fiscal year 2016. The sector wise approval of SEZ depicts

that 64 percent of the share belongs to IT or ITES field. Thus the analysis of SEZ from this study

point depict that SEZ like Mindspace is extremely important from Indian economy and

employment concern as these areas contribute a lot to Indian GDP and employment opportunities

for Indian citizens.

So when in consideration to an IT industry, the situation of the employees working in that

industry should be considered, as indirectly the company’s prosperity lies in the commitment

given by the employee towards his work. If employees working in the industry are not satisfied

with their work and feel that their existence is neglected by the organization, then this feeling

lowers the productivity level of an employee and employee gets demotivated.

IT industries are adopting a number of measures to retain the employees in their organization and

also to provide a good office environment where each and every employees strive to achieve his

excellence in work. This study aims at finding the root causes which affect the employee

satisfaction level and also to suggest remedies and solutions to enhance their satisfaction level so

that the employees remain committed to their work. Therefore this study is important.
