Worldwide rush to purchase coronavirus vaccines occurs

Coronavirus vaccines are in high demand around the world. However, while wealthy
countries have already done deals with manufacturers, those with limited budgets are having
difficulty obtaining early supplies, according to Al Jazeera’s Jamela Alindogan reports from Manila.
Jerwil Salvador is a COVID 19 survivor from Payatas, one of the poorest countries in
Manila. Spending life savings a few hundred dollars on medicines while in a hospital in a critical
condition, he lost his job, and now struggling how to save his family amidst this pandemic.
“You know, I didn't even get any cash aid this entire time, so I don't even think a vaccine
is something we'll get either”, said Salvador in Filipino.
Salvador went on to say that he just worries about his children and that he doesn't care
about anything else.
Payatas Village Administrator Florante Clarita stated that their residents belong to the
poorest sector of society.
“We, the government workers are looking forward to this vaccine, hoping will be made a
priority”, the administrator said.
Even so, the Philippine government plans to vaccinate up to 60% of the country’s
population to achieve herd immunity.
But in an archipelago with more than 7,000 islands and a national budget for vaccines
that is barely enough, officials admit it will not be easy.
For weeks now, countries around the world have been trying to secure deals to buy
vaccines when they become available. Wealthier countries are bidding for a huge share of
supplies, hoping to vaccinate their entire populations.
On the report of United Nations, two-thirds of the global populations will not get enough.
Many countries including the Philippines, do not have the logistical support to establish an
adequate vaccination program.
According to Philippine Government Chief Carlito Valdez, the priorities for the vaccine
are the front liners.
“The 50% that will be dedicated for the government will be given to the priority sectors
and particularly our health workers and our poor and vulnerable communities”, Valdez said.
“While 50% would be given to the private sector will also be given to their front liners,
low-income laborers to give a fair access”, he added.
Furthermore, over the last few months, the Philippines is seen as the worst performing
country. Many here are concerned that it will be placed at the bottom of the vaccine waiting list.
