SuperPave Aggregate

Requirements

Slide 1
SuperPave Mix
 Mixture of Graded Aggregates held
together with asphalt cement.
 Asphalt Mix is designed against
three primary loadings:
 Rutting (high aggregate
dependence)
 Fatigue Cracking (high asphalt
cement dependence)
 Low Temperature Cracking (high
asphalt cement dependence)

Slide 2
Aggregate Consensus Properties

 Coarse aggregate angularity

 Fine aggregate angularity
 Flat and elongated particles
 Clay content

< 30 95/90 80/75
>30 100/100 100/100

*ESALs = Equivalent Standard Axle Loads

First number denotes % with one or more fractured faces

Second number denotes % with two or more fractured faces

Slide 5
Fine Aggregate Angularity
 Based on aggregates smaller than 2.36 mm
 Dry washed aggregate
 Higher voids = greater internal angle

Slide 7
Flat and Elongated Particles

Slide 8
Flat and Elongated Particles

 Max to mix dimension greater than 5

 Undesirable as they break during construction and under traffic
 Test is for aggregates larger than 4.75 mm

Slide 9
Clay Content (Sand Equivalent)

 Percent clay content in fine aggregate

(<4.75 mm)
 Fine aggregate is mixed with a
flocculating solution
 Ratio of height of sand to clay after
settling

Slide 10
Source Aggregate Properties

Non-SuperPave requirements
 Toughness – abrasion and mechanical degradation during handling,
construction & service (LA Abrasion or Micro Deval)
 Soundness – in service weathering – Magnesium Sulfate,
Petrographic Analysis/Number
 Deleterious Material – clay lumps, shale, wood, mica, gypsum, coal
in the aggregate
 Friction for surface coarse mixes

Slide 11
Gradation for the Mix Design
 Control points for nominal max aggregate size, intermediate size
(2.36 mm), and smallest size (0.75 mm)
 Restricted zone forms a band that is recommended to be avoided
 Intended to prevent “oversanded” mixes that can be tender or have low
resistance to rutting
 Also prevents following max density line that can have inadequate VMA
to allow room for asphalt
