Andy Warhol Article written by the Lyman Allyn Art Museum

After studying commercial art in college, Warhol moved to New
York City in 1949 and began a career in magazine illustration and
advertising. On the side, he produced his own artwork, which came
to be known as “Pop Art.” “Pop” stands for popular and Warhol
liked to use simple and colorful objects from American culture in his
artwork: soup cans, soda bottles, shoes, animals, comic books and
celebrities. He soon worked full-time on his art and experimented
with many different techniques including: drawing, painting, print-
making, photography, silk screening, sculpture and film. One of his
most famous paintings (at right) is made up of 32 individual can-
vases, each showing a different flavor of Campbell’s soup that was
available in 1962. When Warhol displayed this work in a gallery
show, the canvases were lined up on shelves, just like groceries in Campbell’s Soup Cans.

a store. Why do you think he painted all 32 flavors of soup? If you
had to make 32 paintings of a product, which product would you
choose and why?
