learning to get to know them better (informal settings).

expressions and grammar topics.

Lesson B - Then you’ll watch an authentic video to improve your

IDIOMATIC WAYS TO
SAY ‘HELLO'
INFORMAL SETTING

WHAT’S UP?

Who should I say it to? ________________________________________

What does it mean? ________________________________________

How can I reply to that? ________________________________________

The ‘what’s up’ greeting can have two purposes. First, to quickly say hello
to someone and then say goodbye. Second, it can act as a type of small
talk to allow you to start a real conversation.
5

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO?

Who should I say it to? ________________________________________

What does it mean? ________________________________________

How can I reply to that? ________________________________________

‘What are you up to’ is specifically asking about now, what the person is
doing the moment you greet them. You can also use it to talk about the
future. To do that, use some time adverbs like tonight, tomorrow, and
next week.

WHAT’S GOOD?

Who should I say it to? ________________________________________

What does it mean? ________________________________________

How can I reply to that? ________________________________________

It just means how are you, what have you been up to, what’s up? So
when someone asks ‘what’s good?’, just say what you have been doing,
what you’re doing now or what you’re going to do in the near future!
6

LESS INFORMAL

How are you?

How have you been?

These are less informal and the most popular greetings in spoken
English.

The most important thing is being able to respond to these different, yet
very similar greetings and repeating them if you want to continue
talking to the person.

WAYS TO INTRODUCE
YOURSELF & OTHERS
FIRST MEETING

What to do?
Greet, say your name, nice to meet you!

Body language
Handshake? Hug? Kiss?

Introducing other people

This is…….
Let me introduce you to…..
7

If you forget someone’s name, it’s always best to ask them again.
Just say, I”m sorry, I forgot your name.”
Or, a little more informal, “I’m sorry, what’s your name again?”

In case you know the person, and it’s been a long time since you last
saw him/her:
Long time no see!
It’s been a long time!
Not seen you in a while!

What kind of questions are normally asked on a first meeting?

Let’s brainstorm some ideas: Name, nationality, language, relationship,
occupation, age?
