IDIOMATIC WAYS TO
SAY ‘HELLO'
INFORMAL SETTING
WHAT’S UP?
The ‘what’s up’ greeting can have two purposes. First, to quickly say hello
to someone and then say goodbye. Second, it can act as a type of small
talk to allow you to start a real conversation.
5
‘What are you up to’ is specifically asking about now, what the person is
doing the moment you greet them. You can also use it to talk about the
future. To do that, use some time adverbs like tonight, tomorrow, and
next week.
WHAT’S GOOD?
It just means how are you, what have you been up to, what’s up? So
when someone asks ‘what’s good?’, just say what you have been doing,
what you’re doing now or what you’re going to do in the near future!
6
LESS INFORMAL
These are less informal and the most popular greetings in spoken
English.
The most important thing is being able to respond to these different, yet
very similar greetings and repeating them if you want to continue
talking to the person.
WAYS TO INTRODUCE
YOURSELF & OTHERS
FIRST MEETING
What to do?
Greet, say your name, nice to meet you!
Body language
Handshake? Hug? Kiss?
If you forget someone’s name, it’s always best to ask them again.
Just say, I”m sorry, I forgot your name.”
Or, a little more informal, “I’m sorry, what’s your name again?”
In case you know the person, and it’s been a long time since you last
saw him/her:
Long time no see!
It’s been a long time!
Not seen you in a while!

C: So, you have kids, don’t you? How old are they?
A: Yeah,3 girls. A baby, a 7-year-old and a 12-year-old. All at home, no
school now.
C: Dear God! And do you live near here?
A: Actually no. I’m just visiting my mom. I live 300km from here, in Santa
Catarina. You?
C: Me? Well, yes. I live a block from here.
L: There you go!
C: Thank you!
L: And… so, André! How’s your wife? Are you doing anything special this
weekend?
A: Oh, she’s great, but we’re going home tonight.
L: Oh, that's a shame! I’d love to catch up! Can I have your WhatsApp
number?
A: No problem. I can text you now and you save my number again. I got
yours. But, sorry, girls, I gotta go. My Uber's outside.
L: Oh, bye then!
C: Ah! Great to talk to you! See you around and have a safe trip back
home, ok?
A: Thank you! Bye!
