unit 1:

geographer’s
perspective
Regions
Areas distinguished by a
unique combination of
trends or features

Zootopia is split into a

variety of biomes: Sahara
Square, Tundratown, and
the Burrows are a few
examples.
Physical Site
Characteristics
A location’s climate,
topography, soil, water
sources, vegetation, and
elevation

Each of the regions has a

unique set of characteristics.
yikes
Sex
Ratio
The number of males
per 100 females.

One (odd) way to

measure the sex ratio
in Zootopia is with
100 female rabbits
per 1 male fox.

Relative Location
The position of something
relative to another
landmark

Nick Wilde is next to the

city hall building. It is not
exact, but it uses a
landmark to describe
where he is at.
unit 2:
population and
migration
Overpopulation

The amount of people in Bunny

Burrow exceeds the carrying
capacity of the environment
leading to lower standards of
living from crowdedness. There
are far too many rabbits for the
size of the burrow in which they
live so they will have less space
and resources per person.
Activity Space
Place where people go to
do a certain job/activity

The Naturalist Club is a

place where naturalist
animals go to meditate,
play sports, and
participate in other
activities.
people in their productive years (ages 15-64)

Dependency Ratio
The dependency ratio is the number of
people in a population that can’t
work/support themselves (ages 0-14
and 65+) compared to the number that
can (ages 15-65).

In this example from Zootopia, there

are a lot more dependents (all of the
children) than productive workers (the
adults) so there is a higher
dependency ratio.

people too young/old to work (ages 0-14 and 65+)

unit 3: cultural
patterns and
processes
Acculturation
The process of adjustment to
the dominant culture

After moving from Bunny

Burrows to the big city, Judy
had to accustom herself with
the fast-paced lifestyle that
her neighbors and coworkers
had.
Pop Culture
Culture found in a large,
society that shares certain
habits despite differences in
other personal characteristics

Gazelle is a prominent figure in

Zootopia’s pop culture. She’s
featured on news stations, fan
apps, and billboards across
the city.
Taboo
A restriction on behavior
imposed by social custom

To bunnies, it’s considered

taboo to be closely
associated with foxes since
they’re considered as a
natural predator. Judy and
Nick overcome this.
unit 4: political
development &
organization of
space
Capital
The principle or main city of a
country or state

Fun fact: Zootopia was going to be

named Zootropolis after the word
metropolis which is a capital city.
This means Zootopia is like the
capital city of the animal country or
kingdom.

Centripetal
Something that brings
things together

In Zootopia, a centripetal
force that brings Judy and
Nick together is that they
are both cops.

Centripetal
An actual example of this is
the idea that all animals can
live together in harmony and
sing kumbaya.

When people / the animals

feel safe and secure where
they are, it enhances support
for the establishment.
Centrifugal
Something that pulls things
apart and is usually a source
of conflict

The inherent fear that

predators will eat prey is a
major dividing force among
animals.
unit 5:
agriculture, food
production &
rural land
Subsistence Agriculture
Agriculture designed to provide
food for the farmer and their
family

In the Burrows, every family is

big, so most depend on
farming to provide for
themselves. The bunnies learn
how to distinguish plants and
work the fields at a young age.
Undernourishment
Dietary energy consumption
that is continuously below
the minimum requirement for
maintaining a healthy
lifestyle

Judy was probably

undernourished in her living
conditions.
Truck Farming
Commercial gardening /
growing common crops for
sale

While some bunnies would

feed their families, others
would make a living off
selling products grown by
hand.
unit 6: industry,
services, &
economic
development
Gender
range of characteristics
pertaining to femininity and
masculinity. Depending on
the context, these
characteristics may include
biological sex, sex-based
social structures, or gender
identity

Judy identifies as female

and Nick identifies as male.

Infrastructure
The public works systems
(highways, roads, airports,
railroads, etc.)

The city is connected

through its roads, as well as
an underground / above
ground train system,
Industry
A segment of the economy that
focuses on a specific product
or service

The construction industry of

Zootopia is responsible for
crafting the various sized
buildings featured throughout
the regions.
unit 7: cities &
urban land use
Quaternary
Sector
Jobs related to medicine,
law, education, investment
and finance, research and
development, and computer
technology

Judy works for the police

department, which is
considered a part of the
Quaternary Sector.
Quinary Sector
Jobs that involve facilitating
complex decision making
and the advancement of
human capacities

Mayor Lionheart is the

“noble leader” of the city.
He works in the quinary
sector.
CBD (central
business district)
The area of a city where
retail and office activities
are clustered

Nick sold his pawpsicles in

Zootopia’s CBD. This was
evident from the cluster of
buildings and businessman
emerging to buy his treats.
