and refer the list of materials suggested by PMI in addition to this study group.
13
The PMP Exam

PMI-PMP exam online

Además, asegúrese de cumplir con los siguientes requisitos antes de realizar su examen en línea:
1. Ubicación tranquila y privada, asegúrese de que nadie ingrese antes de completar su examen y
cerrar su sistema
2. Sistema confiable con cámara web
3. Fuerte conexión a Internet
4. Requisitos del sistema mediante la ejecución de "Probar mi sistema" en el sitio de Pearson UVE
5. Políticas y procedimientos de Pearson UVE Consulte el enlace para obtener más detalles:
https://home.pearsonvue.com/pmi/onvue

(PMI membership information). However, the decision to pay for the initial PMI membership is a local
management decision; please check with your manager for the practice in your business unit.
‒ As an IBM employee you are entitled to a $60 discount on the exam if you are paying in $. Candidates
from India & Brazil can pay in their local currency which equivalent to discounted price, there is no
further discount. Read about the exam fee and process at PMI Exam Process in the PMCoE website.

‒ Purchase a hard copy of the PMBOK (On Amazon.com sells ~ $66 USD).
‒ Borrow a copy from another PM (must be the same version).
‒ Browse the PMBOK chapters at Safari online book store:
https://www.safaribooksonline.com/library/view/a-guide-to/9781628253900/ (Login with your intranet id in the safari
books online site - no password and then your w3 login will be prompted after that you will get access to PMBOK V6).

information, playback session files and many other tips
25
10 Steps to Passing PMP Exam (continued)

4. Create a Study Plan and identify the best time for you to schedule the PMP exam. The application
process will be reviewed in Session 2.
5. Gather materials to help you study.
‒ Obtain The PMBOK in hard copy. Digital copies can be cumbersome/expensive to print. The
PMBOK is also available in audio book format. IBM does not own a license to PMBOK, so you
are responsible to purchase it.
‒ Consider purchasing the highly-recommended “Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep” book. It
explains concepts with a more interesting approach. This is not required for the Study Group.
‒ PMBOK content comprises only part of the test material, so it is recommended that you study
other supplemental materials, particularly the Udemy exam prep course
‒ Print the IBM Study Guide Notes 6th Edition and questions (double sided) located on the PMI
Study Group Wiki.

26
10 Steps to Passing PMP Exam (continued)
6. Read the PMBOK once completely, reading for concepts, similarities, and for overall understanding
of how the methodology works.
‒ Do not try to memorize or research every detail or concept. The important concepts will be
referenced repeatedly.
‒ After reading the PMBOK, take a practice exam with at least 30-100 questions. This practice
exercise will help identify potential weak areas where you need focused study. Time is
precious, so study efficiently.
‒ Notice the framework of the methodology and how inputs, tools/techniques, and outputs are
developed and feed into the prior and subsequent steps of the process areas.
‒ Study definitions and formulas and begin to create your own cheat sheet of them. There is a
glossary to help you.
‒ Don’t expect to study during business hours on a regular basis. It will be difficult to manage
the time.

27
10 Steps to Passing PMP Exam (continued)
7. Keep pace with 1 chapter per week with your Study Group
‒ Go to the Wiki and enroll in the Study Group of your preference today!
‒ Each week:
• Read assigned PMBOK chapter to be ready for the weekly review (1 hour) and that same
session section in the Udemy exam prep course

questions (1 hour)
• Attend your study group weekly session. Review the answers you got wrong and any guesses
you got right. Look up the PMBOK references in the answer key and make notes on your flash
cards for later review. Be sure to review the concepts you missed. Discuss topics and questions
with your study group (1 or 2 hours)
• As you review, be sure to draw parallels, notice patterns, and note comparisons between
similar terms and processes where you should be able to define key differences. define key

‒ Taking practice exams will help simulate the test situation and how to manage the exam time
in order to evaluate how prepared you are and identify areas for further study.
‒ You may be surprised at how much you have retained, so no need to over study – the exam is
pass/fail
9. Set aside several days of dedicated study prior to test day.
‒ Be aware that you will be faced, even on test day, with material you have never seen before -
so don't panic!
‒ Every morning, take 15 minutes and practice making your cheat sheet that you will recreate
once inside the testing room
‒ Set aside several days the week before the exam for intensive study.
10. Take the final exam!!

DELETE THE INVITATION, but use the ‘Decline’ button that is part of a calendar invite. So, the
enrollment system will be updated.

‒ You can also cancel or decline your enrollment from the enrollment system.

33
How A Typical PMI Exam Study Session Works
• Before each call, please download that week’s study materials and study!

• Your facilitator will start the teleconference session and turn the call over to a fellow facilitator or
student leader for a brief summary of the chapter.

• The facilitator or student leader calls on participants to review/answer the questions in the Study
Guide; discussion centers on how to get to the right answer and why the answer is the correct
selection.

• At the end of the session:

➢ The groups may also review any test questions by request from previous weeks for additional
clarification as time permits
➢ The PMP facilitator checks to see if there are any other discussion topics.
➢ A volunteer is requested to lead the next week’s session before the end the call.

34
How A Typical PMI Exam Study Session Works

• Remember to Mark Your Attendance, once the session is completed in the Event Series / Enrolments
page located in the enrolment system.
• The Study Group Replays page will be updated in the PMI Wiki, with playback information in 24
hours after a session has completed.
• Only 4 study groups will record their sessions, one per language. Recordings will be undertaken by
the following study groups:
• NA (English);
• PA (Portuguese);
• SA (Spanish);
• JA (Japanese)

35
What is expected of you? (continued)

• If you can not attend your usual weekly section (time/day):

– Let your facilitator know that you will not be able to attend.
– Enroll and join another group for the same week, if you can OR
– Listen to the replay of the topic to review the material to keep pace.

• Replays will be available each week:

– Replays are available for every Session topic on the Study Guides & replay . They are available
in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese
– Make sure to mark your attendance on the enrollment site after each session you attend.
These system records will be used as the basis for validating your contact unit hours and for
the system generated attendance report which you can print at any time during the cycle.

37
Next Study Group Meeting

• After this call, be sure to enroll for Sessions of the PMI Exam Study Group of your preference.
Study Groups commence next week
• Select a Study Group and Session time that works for you and follow the Enrollment steps, detailed
earlier to enroll into the same Study Group each week.
• Check your Lotus Notes calendar for links to the call-in details and accept the invitations.
• Locate the Study Guide materials from the link provided in the calendar invitation to prepare for the
session.
• Commit to completing PMI Certification application to qualify for the exam. Set aside time to
complete the PMI application.
• Be committed to the study process!!!

38
Lessons Learned…
• Be sure to download the latest version of the study notes version 6.0 - Check the PMBOK Sixth
Edition Study Notes page

• It is highly recommended to select a study group section time before or after your work day or
during a lunch time to minimize conflicts with project work

• Create a “cheat sheet”: formulas, tables, facts that you can recreate on exam day

• The PMI® exam is from PMI®, not IBM, so be aware the correct answer aligns with PMI®
methodology, not necessarily IBM processes

• The PMP® Exam is 4 hrs. and 40 min in length - it includes all exam questions (230 min), two
breaks of 10 min each (20 min), a 15 min tutorial, and 15 min survey you must complete before
receiving your test results

• Study, study, study …. Did I mention to STUDY?
