MESUREME

NT OF
POSITION
A measure of position is a method by which
the position that a particular data value has within a given
data set can be identified.

What is a Quartile?
A quartile is a statistical term describing a division of
observations into four defined intervals based upon the
values of the data and how they compare to the entire set of
observations.
KEY TAKEAWAYS

 The quartile measures the spread of values above and

below the mean by dividing the distribution into four
groups.
 A quartile divides data into three points – a lower quartile,
median, and upper quartile – to form four groups of the
data set.
 Quartiles are used to calculate the interquartile range,
which is a measure of variability around the median.

WHAT IS PERCENTILE?
A percentile (or a centile) is a measure used
in statistics indicating the value below which a
given percentage of observations in a group of
observations falls. For example, the 20th percentile
is the value (or score) below which 20% of the
observations may be found.

The deciles 2 and 7.

The percentiles 32 and 85.

Given the series:
3, 5, 2, 7, 6, 4, 9.
3, 5, 2, 7, 6, 4, 9.

3, 5, 2, 7, 6, 4, 9, 1.

Calculate:
Quartiles
The mode, median and mean.

The average deviation, variance and standard deviation.

The quartiles 1 and 3.

Deciles Percentiles
7 · (2/10) = 1.4 D2 = 3 7 · (32/100) = 2,2 P32 = 4
7 · (7/10) = 4.9 D7 = 6 7 · (85/100) = 5.9 P85 = 7

What Is a Decile?
A decile is a quantitative method of splitting up a set of
ranked data into 10 equally large subsections. This type
of data ranking is performed as part of many academic
and statistical studies in the finance and economics
fields. The data may be ranked from largest to smallest
values, or vice versa.
A decile, which has ten categorical buckets may be
contrasted with percentiles that have one hundred,
quartiles that have four, or quintiles that have five.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

 A decile is a quantitative method of splitting up a set

of ranked data into 10 equally large subsections.
 A decile rank arranges the data in order from lowest
to highest and is done on a scale of one to ten where
each successive number corresponds to an increase
of 10 percentage points.
 This type of data ranking is performed as part of
many academic and statistical studies in the finance
and economics FIELDS
