DuringmytimeintheInstructionalTechnologyprogramatKennesawStateUniversity,I
havebeenprovidedmanyopportunitiestogrowinmyknowledgeandskillsoftechnology-based
learningexperiencesforstudents.Someoftheseprofessionallearningopportunitiesinclude
virtualtvandSmartBoardtrainingwhereIlearnedtousethesetoolstoprovidemystudents
withopportunitiestousethemtoparticipate,takeownershipoftheirlearning,andsharetheir
learningmoreeffectively.OneofthemostimpactfulprofessionaldevelopmentsessionsI
participatedinwaslearninghowtousevirtualandaugmentedrealitywithstudents.This
professionallearningopportunityiswhatsparkedmyinterestformycapstoneprojectandgave
metheideatoimplementthistypeoflearningwithsciencestudentsatmyschool.

Completingthisartifactallowedmetogrowinmypracticeasbothateacherand
instructionaltechnologycoach.TheamountofnewknowledgeandskillsIgainedduringthe
virtualandaugmentedrealityprofessionallearningguidedmetowardusingthistypeof
technologyasmycapstone.Toimprovetheprocessofparticipatingintheseprofessional
learningopportunities,Iwouldhavecomepreparedwithbackgroundknowledgeandspecific
questionsIwantedtohaveanswered.AftertheprofessionaldevelopmentIcompleted,Iwas
abletoreachouttothehostofthesessionstohavequestionsanswered,butIthinkitwould
havemadeagreaterimpacttobeabletodiscussthequestionsandanswersinpersonrather
thanthroughemail.
Howdidtheworkthatwentintocreatingthisartifactimpactschoolimprovement,faculty
development,orstudentlearning?Howcanthisimpactbeassessed?
TheprofessionallearningthattookplaceinthesessionsIattendedimpactedfaculty
developmentandstudentlearning.Ibecamesoexcitedabouttheopportunitiesvirtualreality
learningexperiencescouldprovideformystudentsthatIwantedtoshareitwithothers.This
promptedmycapstoneproposal,whichturnedintotheyearlongcapstoneprojectI
implemented.WhatIlearnedinthevirtualandaugmentedrealityprofessionaldevelopment
guidedmeasIcoachedscienceteachersinmyschooltoimplementthisnewtechnologyand
createdhands-onlearningexperiencesforallstudents.Studentlearningwaspositivelyimpacted
throughtheuseofthevirtualrealityexperienceswewereabletoprovide.
