Conclusion
Aim
• To study the factor that influences the pulse rate

Problem statement
• How does vigorous activity influence the increase of pulse
rate?

Hypothesis
• The pulse rate increases when carrying out vigorous
activity
Variables
• Manipulated : Type of vigorous activity

• Responding : The pulse rate

• Constant : Duration of activity

Material
• Stopwatch
Procedure
1. Carry out the activity in pairs

2. Measure the pulse rate of your friend during resting

by placing two fingers on the opposite wrist as
shown in the diagram. Count the pulse rate in 15
seconds, then multiply by 4 to obtain the pulse
rate for 1 minute

3. Ask your friend to run in place for one minute and

measure his/her pulse rate using stopwatch after
conducting the activity

4. Ask your friend to rest for a few minutes until the

pulse rate returns to normal

5. Repeat step 3 and 4 by doing other activities as

stated in the table

Discussion
Which activity is considered the most vigorous
• Jumping star

Which activity is considered the least vigorous

• Resting

Give reason for your answer at (a) and (b)

• Jumping star activity produces highest pulse rate as compared
to other activities.
• Resting produces lowest pulse rate compared to other activities.
Discussion
What is the effect of doing vigorous exercise on the
pulse rate

• The pulse rate increases

What will happen to the pulse rate if the time take to carry
out vigorous exercise is extended to 5 minutes. Explain.

Increase
• The pulse rate will . During
Frequently vigorous exercise, the
heart pumps blood more to the body parts that
Increases
require oxygen. The cells demand towards oxygen as
cells need to do respiration so that energy can be produced
Discussion
State other physiological changes that can be observed
when carrying out vigorous activity

• The body will produce sweats

State other factor that can influence the pulse rate other
than vigorous activity

• Age, gender and body health

Conclusion
• Hypothesis is accepted

• The pulse rate Increases When carrying out vigorous activity
