Standards (State 6. Derive the equation of a circle of given center and radius using the
and ISTE Pythagorean Theorem.
Standards for
Students)
a. Given the endpoints of the diameter of a circle, use the midpoint formula
to find its center and then use the Pythagorean Theorem to find its
equation.
Objectives I can. . .
Create a right triangle in a circle using the horizontal and vertical shifts
from the center as the legs and the radius of the circle as the hypotenuse.
Write the equation of the circle in standard form when given the endpoints
of the diameter of a circle, using the midpoint formula to find the circle's
center, and then use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the equation of the
circle.
Find the distance between two points when using the Pythagorean
Theorem and use that process to create the Distance Formula.

E Description
Engageme Students will be encouraged to engage with the attached YouTube Video reminding students
nt of their prior mathematical concepts for the desired skill that will be taught later:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQl13Zz2jOs
Engageme The following purposeful questions will be incorporated to activate and engage students with
nt prior knowledge of the midpoint formula, distance formula, and the pythagorean theorem. As
Assessmen students are recalling their previous experience, have them answer the following questions:
t https://teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilder/custom/5b213b2cfac3430d387b0ec5
Exploration The following interactive game is a jeopardy game that is a review from 8th grade. You can
have anywhere from 1-4 players:
https://www.math-play.com/Pythagorean-Theorem-Jeopardy/pythagorean-theorem-jeopardy-
game_html5.html
Students will start in teams of 3 or 4. After selecting their character they will chose between the
topics of finding the unknown leg, unknown hypotenuse, or pythagorean theorem converse.
This game is played like your average jeopardy game where you pick your amount before
seeing the question. It is multiple choice.
For students who have not mastered the concepts completely would receive feedback from
their partner if the partner received the correct answer for the problem. If neither partner
received the correct solution to the assignment, the students would write down the problem
missed on a separate sheet of paper for the collaborative whole group discussion.
For students who master the concepts competitively, they will not have to write down the
problem. In the same manner as for the students who have trouble mastering the concepts as
the questions progressively get harder, they will also receive explanation from their peers as to
why they received the solution they got, or they will both write down their questions for whole
group discussion.
Explanatio - How do you find the distance between two points when using the Pythagorean
n Theorem and use that process to create the Distance Formula.
- How can you create a right triangle in a circle using the horizontal and vertical shifts
from the center as the legs and the radius of the circle as the hypotenuse.
- How do you write the equation of the circle in standard form when given the
endpoints of the diameter of a circle,

Once the rules/concepts have been finalized, a graphic organizer will be created displaying the
(i) distance formula, (ii) midpoint formula, (iii) and pythagorean theorem. Students will also
receive a blank copy to complete using their own examples.
Elaboration That project has instructions on what is to be expected as well as an example embedded within
the assignment of what students should complete:
(You need to decorate a poster that has facts and examples of the Pythaogrean Thoerem. Use an
example you have done before to put on your poster. Title the poster as The Pythagorean Theorem
and make sure it is colorful. You can draw pictures and do whatever you have to do to make it
pretty. Make sure it is neat and can be read. Once you finish it, you must upload a picture of your
poster. Whoever has the best poster in every class will get 5 bonus points added to their next test.)
