‘The Philippine Seas’ is a documentary by Atom Araullo wherein he ventured in to the

large bodies of water between the island of Negros, Cebu and Palawan showcasing the natural
beauty it possess and its rich and abundant biodiversity where millions of species are inhabiting.
Playful dolphins and other animals living under the sea are some of the attractions that allure
tourist to visit the place. However, it is mentioned that due to the reason that the sea is a vast area
to protect, it is inevitable that some foreign vessels strayed to the area and illegally fish and kill
animals that could possibly lead to their endangerment. Together with the problem of pollution,
another issue that was presented in the documentary is about the difficulty faced by many
Filipino fishermen wherein there is an increase in the amount of people who fish consequently
there is a decrease on the volume of the fishes that were caught.

As someone who lived very distant from the sea, we rarely think of its real and current
situation and doesn’t really have any idea on what could have possibly going on unless we read
news and articles regarding the condition of our own sea. I have learned that being aware on real
state of the sea is the initial step towards providing contributions that can be highly convenient to
our sea thus we can make our own little ways to help. Watching the documentary makes me
appreciate the sea on a higher level knowing that it doesn’t only sustain the livelihood of our
fisherman but our sea plays a bigger role to the whole diversity of the earth. So it really takes a
global effort to make up with the damages that the humanity have done to these large bodies of
water. And it is really true that there is more under the tip on an iceberg because as we stare at
the shore of a sea, we view the serene waves rushing in and smell the breeze coming from the
nature but there is more beings that just like us, humans also live their everyday life and still
remain undiscovered.
