MULSIFIER SYSTEM

The mulsifier system is a fire protection system intended for

power transformers. The mulsifier system initiates a water spray on the
transformer in case of a fire. Water supply is from the main fire fighting
system of the plant consisting of a pumping station provided with one
electric and one diesel fire fighting pump. Pressurized autoclave tank
with two air compressors ensures constant pressure.

GENERAL SYSTEM ARRANGEMENT:

The system covers the following three transformers

1.Generator transformer.
2. Unit transformer.
3. Station transformer.

The main parts of the system are

1.Sprinkler.
2.Nozzle
3.Deluge valve.

SPRINKLERS:
They are the fire sensors designed to operate at a temperature
range of 68 to 93 deg centigrade, against a pressure of 175 psi. They are
supplied with air from the fire fighting air compressors.

NOZZLE:
A set of nozzles is provided around the transformer in two
elevations, which provide a spray mist of water when operated.

DELUGE VALVE:
The deluge valve forms the main part of the system, which
uses water for its application and allows the system to operate either
from

1.Remote.
2.Local manual.
3.Automatic.
The above said modes of operation are described in detail

AUTOMATIC:

When sprinkler senses high temperature it bursts and

releases the air it holds, resulting in decreased air pressure which was
holding against the water pressure in the diaphragm shown in fig 3.This
allows the water to drain, as a result water pressure holding the
diaphragm against the clapper shown in fig 2 is reduced, so the clapper
moves to the position shown in dotted lines (refer fig2) and releases the
clapper. This allows pressurized water into the system and which is
sprayed as mist through the nozzles provided.

REMOTE:

When a remote switch, provided in the control room, is

operated the solenoid (refer fig 3) operates, it allows the water to drain.
This results in reduced pressure in the diaphragm holding clapper, and
the aforementioned sequence will repeat.

LOCAL MANUAL:

By operating the valve shown in fig 3 water can be drained,

resulting in the same sequence described earlier.

RE-SETTING:

Close the inlet and outlet valves of the deluge system. The
following procedure should be done
 Drain the system completely.
 Set right the sprinklers if it has operated automatically.
 Ensure the healthiness of the nozzles.
 Ensure the healthiness of the diaphragm and the clapper.
 Normalize the air supply to the diaphragm in fig 3. Ensure there is
no drop in pressure.
 Slowly normalize the water supply to the system.
 Reset the clapper and clapper latch to its original position.
 Open the inlet and outlet valves of the deluge system.
 Ensure that there are no leaks.

PRECAUTION:

The following inspection may be done when the mulsifier is

operated manually, either from local or remote as part of testing.
 Ensure the system is free from any physical damage.
 Megger the transformer (LV side of GT & ST and both sides of
UT).

CHECKS:
The following can be done as quarterly or half-yearly
maintenance.
 Ensure the entire system is free from water \ air leaks.
 Ensure the sprinkler healthiness.

As a part of the annual maintenance, the system can be operated in

all modes to ensure its availability during emergency. This can be done
even during short unit shutdowns.
