DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General data

A. This page block gives the description of the serviceable properties of the Dual
Torque Indicator with the part numbers on the title page.

2. Primary Function of the Dual Torque Indicator

A. The primary function of the Dual Torque Indicator is to give the indication of the 2
signals that follow :
(1) The indicator provides two torques indications through two pointers actuated
by two electrically independent motors.
(2) Each channel actuates a concentric pointer indicating the torque from an
electrical signal. A two positions switch is used to read either the torque of
each motor as indicated by the corresponding pointer, or the sum of both
torques, as indicated on the pointer «2+1».

5. Operation

A. The indicator operates in connection with two variable transmitters wich are
supplied with 1000 Hz current.

B. The variation in oil pressure from the motor causes the variation in reluctance of
the magnetic circuits of the associated transmitters and this results in a voltage
variation measured by the servomotor units.

C. The pointers are driven by reduction gears and they move in front of a percentage
graduated dial.
(1) pointer 1 indicates the value of the motor 1 torque.
(2) pointer 2+1 indicates:
(a) the sum of both torques if the switch setting is «2+1» and if the
difference between both torques is lower than 225 mV ± 11 mV
(magnetic indicator is black).
(b) the value of the greater torque if the difference between both torques is
greater than or equal to 225 mV ± 11 mV (magnetic indicator is red and
white striped).
(c) the value of motor 2 torque if the switch setting is «2» (magnetic
indicator is red and white striped).

D. In case of no power supply, the two pointers come to rest under the 5% graduation
mark.

(6) Checking the correct operation of the magnetic indicator and its electronic
switching:
(a) You must associate the equipments number 6, 7, 8 and 9 for each way
independently in order to check correctly the thresholds between the
two ways.
(b) With both pointers at zero, set the switch to position ”2+1” (the pointer
2+1 moves slightly): the indicator must show its black face; reset the
switch to position ”2”: the indicator must show its red and white striped
face.
(c) The switch being at ”2”, set both pointers to zero and note the voltage
corresponding to each channel:
1 first case: torque 1 > torque 2 :
a Set the switch in position ”2+1”; increase the voltage of the
channel 1 until switching of the magnetic indicator, that must
then show its red and white striped face.
b Note the voltage at the switching point which must be
225 mV ± 11 mV added to that noted at zero on the other
channel.

c Increase the voltage of the channel 1 until indicating 50%.

Verify that the difference at 50% between the two pointers is
less than ± 1.5%. Estimate this value.
d Reset the switch to position ”2” and both pointers to zero.
2 second case: torque 2 > torque 1:
a Both pointers to zero. Set the switch in position ”2+1”;
increase the voltage of the channel 2 until switching of the
magnetic indicator, that must then show its red and white
striped face.
b Note the voltage at the switching point which must be
225 mV ± 11 mV added to that noted at zero on the other
channel.
(7) Checking the summing operation
(a) With the switch in position ”2” and the two pointers at zero, then set
both pointers to 10%. Place the switch in position ”2+1”. The pointer
”2+1” should indicate the sum of the two previously displayed torques
(at the applicable tolerances in the Table 103).
(b) This can be verified by taking various points.

Table 103
Tolerance on the sum

Indication in % for each channel 10 30 50

Tolerance on the sum in % indication ± 1.5 ± 1.5 ±1

NOTE : Verify that when in the summing configuration, the pointer

”2+1” can attain 110% without rotating.
(8) Zero Rest Check
(a) Cut the power supply to the indicator and verify that the two pointers
come to rest under the 5% graduation mark.
