Mechanical Adjustment Of Hydrostatic

Power Control Unit Linkage (Internal)

NOTE: Mechanical adjustment of power control unit linkage will be necessary any time
the linkage is disassembled. All adjustments must be made in the sequence shown. If
any adjustments are made out of sequence, the power control unit linkage will not be
adjusted correctly. The following nomenclature will be used during the adjustment of the
power control unit linkage: 1) underspeed valve, 2) left steer cam, 3) right steer cam, 4)
left synch adjustment screw, 5) servo centering spring, 6) right synch adjustment screw.
Right and left are as seen from the operator's seat when the hydrostatic power control
unit is installed in the machine.

1. If the hydrostatic control unit is in the machine, lift the cab. See the index for the
location of that procedure.

2. Remove the cover from the top of the hydrostatic power control unit.

NOTICE

When the bolt and nut that hold the centering spring and synch
link to bracket (10) are removed, do not let the washers and
spacer fall into the case.

3. Remove the bolt and nut that hold the centering spring and synch link to bracket (10).

4. Check the end play of rod (9). The end play must be 0.25 mm (.001 in.) or less in the
centering spring sleeve. If end play is greater than .025 mm (.001 in.), loosen locknut (8)

on the right side of the centering spring, and adjust nut (7) until end play is .025 mm (.001

in.) or less. Tighten locknut (8), and check the end play again.

5. Install bolt (11) through the rod end of the centering spring, spacer (12) and rod end
(13) of the synch link. With a washer (14) on both sides of the bracket, install bolt (11)
through the bracket, and install the nut on the bolt.

6. Disconnect oil line (17) from tee (15), and move clear of the tee. Remove oil line (16).
Remove tee (15) from the underspeed valve.

7. Install tooling (A) in the hole in plug (19), and turn the rod of tooling (A) into the stem in
the underspeed valve as far as it will go. Do not tighten nut (18) at this time.

NOTE: Locknuts (24) on the underspeed end of direction-speed link (21) and pilot valve
link (23) both have left hand threads.

8. With the stem in the underspeed valve fully down, adjust forward-reverse link (21) to
be the same as the center position of forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) to the servo
centering spring in the following way:

a. Loosen the locknuts at each end of direction-speed link (21) and pilot valve link (23).

b. Temporarily adjust pilot valve link (23) to put forward-neutral-reverse lever (22)
horizontally in the approximate center of full speed stops (20). This is to be sure there is
no contact between forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) and full speed stops (20) during
the adjustment of direction-speed link (21).

c. Keep the tops of rod ends (25) on the direction-speed link tilted to the rear as shown
during the adjustment of the direction-speed link and while the locknuts are tightened.
This will prevent an error in the adjustment of the direction-speed link.

d. Turn direction-speed link (21) one direction until a small amount of movement is seen
at one end of servo centering spring (5).

e. Turn direction-speed link (21) in the opposite direction until a small amount of
movement is seen at the other end of servo centering spring (5). Make a note of the
number of turns needed.

f. Turn the direction-speed link (21) back 1/2 the number of revolutions turned in Step (e),
and tighten both locknuts at the rod ends.

g. To check the adjustment, move forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) to the right and left
between full speed stops (20), and look for the same amount of movement at both ends
of servo centering spring (5). If no movement can be seen, tighten nut (18) on tooling (A)
slowly until movement can be seen. Adjust direction-speed link (21) to get the same
amount of movement at both ends of servo centering spring (5). To make this adjustment,
it can be necessary to turn only one rod end a small amount at a time. If the result of the
adjustment is that rod ends (25) are no longer tilted the same as shown in Step c, be sure
direction-speed link (21) can turn enough to move freely when forward-neutral-reverse
lever (22) is moved. Forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) can move through its full range
only when the underspeed valve is pulled fully up.

9. Adjust both the right and left steer cams so that when the steering lever moves roller
(28) through the cam there is no movement of the servo stem lever (29). Make this
adjustment in the following way:

a. Loosen bolts (27) just enough so left steer cam (2) can be moved.

b. Use left hand steer link (26) to pull roller (28) forward and backward through the steer
cam. While roller (28) is pulled forward and backward through the steer cam, turn steer
cam (2) on its pivot pin until the forward and backward movement of the roller causes no
movement of servo stem lever (29).

NOTE: A plastic hammer can be used to turn the steer cam a very small amount at a
time. This will make the adjustment easier.

c. Tighten bolts (27). Use the steer lever on the front of the case to move roller (28)
forward and backward through steer cam (2), and check again for movement of servo
stem lever (29).

d. Use the same procedure to adjust right steer cam (3).

keyword=setting&tab=3&serialNumber=19z01732&infoType=8&serviceMediaNumber=SENR4215&serviceIeSystemControlNumber=SENR4215005
10. Put the left synch screw in the center of its adjustment range as follows:

a. Pull roller (28) away from the end of the left steer cam as shown. Turn left synch screw
(4) in or out until the length of threads (W) that extends through the cam is the same as
gap (X), the gap between the head of screw (4) and the steer cam. This gives the same
adjustment range of synch screw (4) in each direction.

b. Use detent (30) to hold synch screw (4) in place. Tighten detent (30) until synch screw
(4) cannot be turned by hand. Tighten the locknut on the detent.

11. Check steer levers (31) for clearance as follows:

a. Be sure both rollers (28) are against both adjustment screws (4) in the steer cams.

b. With both rollers against the adjustment screws, steer levers (31) must be free to move
away from stop (32) so there is a clearance (Y). The amount of clearance is not
important, but the steer levers must be free to move a small distance. If there is no
clearance, check the assembly of the steer levers and the keyways both inside and
outside the hydrostatic power control unit case.

12. Pull the underspeed valve fully up as follows:

a. Hold the stud of tooling (A) so it will not turn, and tighten nut (18) until the stem in the
underspeed valve is tight against the plug at the top of the valve. The underspeed valve
must be fully up for the remainder of the adjustment of the power control unit linkage.

13. Adjust the center position of the pilot valve to the centering spring as follows:

a. Install tool (D) over the pin in the lever between the stops as shown.

https://sis2.cat.com/#/detail?
keyword=setting&tab=3&serialNumber=19z01732&infoType=8&serviceMediaNumber=SENR4215&serviceIeSystemControlNumber=SENR4215005
NOTE: Tool (D) must be installed to make the adjustment more accurate because pilot
valve link (23) does not have enough adjustment range to cause the pin in the lever to
come in contact with the stops during the adjustment procedure.

b. Loosen both locknuts on pilot valve link (23), and turn the nuts to the center of the link.

c. Turn pilot valve link (23) in one direction until a small load is felt.

d. Turn pilot valve link (23) in the opposite direction until a small load is felt. Make a note
of the total number of turns needed.

e. Turn the pilot valve link back 1/2 the number of revolutions turned in Step d, and
tighten both locknuts on the link. After the adjustment is made, both gaps (Z) must be the
same.

NOTE: If pilot valve link (23) cannot be adjusted because there is not enough adjustment
range in one direction, make an adjustment to the eye of the stem in the pilot valve to
increase the adjustment range of pilot valve link (23).

f. Remove tool (D) from the pin in the lever between the stops.

14. Adjust forward and reverse speed stops (20) with tooling (B) as follows:

a. Install pointer (34) from tooling (B) over left servo stem bolt (33) as shown.

b. Install protractor (35) from tooling (B) on the case as shown. Adjust protractor (35) so
the curve (arc) is exactly under the end of pointer (34) during the full movement of the
pointer.

NOTE: If the protractor is not adjusted correctly, the forward and reverse speed stops will
not be adjusted correctly.

c. After the protractor is adjusted, put pointer (34) over the zero point of the protractor as
shown.

keyword=setting&tab=3&serialNumber=19z01732&infoType=8&serviceMediaNumber=SENR4215&serviceIeSystemControlNumber=SENR4215005
NOTE: Allen wrench or allen socket (33) does not have a tight fit in the hole in the servo
stem bolts. Be sure to adjust the pointer so the wrench or socket is tight in the direction
the forward-reverse lever is moved and during the adjustment of the full speed stops.

d. Push forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) against forward full speed stop (36), and
adjust the stop until the point is at the correct angle on protractor (35): 943 - 17.5°, 953 -
17.1°. Tighten the locknut on the forward full speed stop. Check the zero setting and full
speed setting several times to prevent any error in the adjustment.

e. Pull forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) against reverse full speed stop (37), and adjust
the stop until the pointer is at the correct angle on protractor (35): 943 - 17.5°, 953 -
17.1°. Tighten the locknut on the reverse full speed stop. Check the zero setting and full
speed setting several times to prevent any error in the adjustment.

f. Remove tooling (B).

15. Assemble tooling (C) as shown.

16. Adjust right synch screw (6) so both servo stems will have the same amount of
movement as follows:

NOTE: Make all adjustments on right synch screw (6). Rollers (28) must be in contact
with the synch screws at all times during the adjustment.

a. Install tooling (C) over pins (38) and (39) on the servo stem levers with the end of the
indicator bar with the narrow opening (slot) over right pin (39). Install the dial indicator
with the 90° lever adapter so it reads against the inside of the right pin (39) as shown.
Adjust the dial of the indicator so the pointer is at zero.

b. Pull forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) in the full forward direction and hold. Forward
direction is toward the right side of the case as shown. Turn right synch screw (6) until
indicator reading is zero. Check several times.

https://sis2.cat.com/#/detail?
keyword=setting&tab=3&serialNumber=19z01732&infoType=8&serviceMediaNumber=SENR4215&serviceIeSystemControlNumber=SENR4215005
c. Move forward-neutral-reverse lever (22) from the full forward to full reverse position.
The total dial indicator movement must be less than .051 mm (.002 in.). Check several
times.

d. Tighten detent (40) until synch screw (6) cannot be turned by hand. Tighten the locknut
on detent (40).

e. Remove tooling (C).

17. Hold the stud of tooling (A) so it will not turn, and loosen nut (18) until the stem in the
underspeed valve is completely down. Remove tooling (A) from the underspeed valve.

18. Install tee (15) in the top of the underspeed valve. Install oil line (16), and connect oil
line (17) to the tee and pilot-overspeed valve.

19. Install the cover on the top of the hydrostatic power control unit.

20. If the hydrostatic power control unit is in the machine, connect all linkage from the
tractor to the hydrostatic power control unit.
