Lion is the biggest cat after the tiger that is originally from Africa even it is also can be
found at India. Lion belongs to the felidae family and the member of panthera as the genus.
Because the largest lion population is in Africa, thus it is also called African lion. India is the
only one country in Asia which becomes the home for Asian lion. In India, lion lives in Gir
Forest National Park but unfortunately, its population is listed as endanger since 1986. While
in Africa, the population of lion is declined since 1990. The most dangerous enemy for lion is
human. In the wild, Lions live in a group of 5 or more consist 1 or two male Lions and the rest
are female.
Lions have to be in a group to hunt together, but usually only female lions hunt their prey
and the male lions stay watching and come to eat the prey first after the females caught their
prey. An adult female lion needs around 5 Kg of meat in a day while the male needs around 7
kg. Even the male is more to be passive in hunting the prey, but the male lion is very strong. It
has dense and long hair in its head and neck to and the hair is very important for male lion to
protect its neck during the fight to claim its area from another male lion.
In the wild, lion lives longer than 10 to 15 years. Mostly, their death is caused by injured
from the fighting or hunting. In normal situation, they can live up to 20 years old. Lion prefers
to live in savanna in which it can easily find the prey such as wildebeest, zebra, buffalo,
giraffe, Sambar deer and wild boar around the weighing of 200-500 kg. Lion usually avoids
adult elephant, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, hyrax and also vervet monkey.
Even lion usually hunts in a day, but it is a nocturnal animal. Lion prefers to sleep in a
day after hunting and eating. In the night, lion keeps a wake even it does not have any
necessary activity. It just likes a cat in general.
