Assignment 01
Instructions:
Answer the questions 01, 02, 03 and 04.

Question 01

Consider the following matrices.

1 1 1 1 2 −3
𝐴 = [2 3 4], 𝐵 = [2 5 −8 ]
5 8 9 3 8 −10

(i) Construct the transpose matrix of the above matrices.

(ii) From the above matrices identify the orthogonal matrices.

Question 02

1 1 1 1 2 −3 2(𝑥 − 1) 2(𝑥 − 2) 2𝑥
Let 𝐴 = [2 3 4], 𝐵 = [2 5 −8 ] and 𝐶 = [ 𝑥 𝑥−1 𝑥 − 2]
5 8 9 3 8 −10 𝑥−2 𝑥 𝑥−1

(i) Find the determinants of the above matrices.

(ii) Determine whether above matrices 𝐴 and 𝐵 are singular matrices or not.
(iii) Determine the value of 𝑥 for the matrix 𝐶 to be a singular matrix.
(iv) Find the adjoint matrices of the above matrices 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶(with the computed
value for 𝑥).
(v) Hence find the inverse of the above matrices, if exists.

Question 03

Consider the following system of linear equations.

(a) 𝑥 − 𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 3 (b) 𝑦 − 4𝑧 = 8
𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 5 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 1
3𝑥 − 4𝑦 − 5𝑧 = −13 5𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 7𝑧 = 1

(c) 𝑥+𝑦+𝑧 =0 (d) 𝑥+𝑦 =2

2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 4𝑧 = 0 𝑥−𝑦 =0
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 − 𝑧 = 0 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 𝑡
where 𝑡 is a parameter
(i) Represent the above system of linear equations in augmented matrix form.
(ii) Find the rank of the augmented matrix.
(iii) Test the consistency of the above system of linear equations.
(iv) Find the solutions for (a) using Cramer’s rule, if possible.
(v) Solve (b) using Gaussian elimination method, if consistent.
(vi) Solve (c) using Gauss-Jordan elimination method, if consistent.
(vii) Discuss the solutions of the system of linear equations (d).

Question 04

Consider the following square matrices.

1 0 −1 −3 1 −1 2−𝑖 0 𝑖
𝐴 = [1 2 1 ], 𝐵 = [−7 5 −1] and 𝐶 = [ 0 1+𝑖 0 ]
2 2 3 −6 6 −2 𝑖 0 2−𝑖

(i) Write the characteristic equation.

(ii) Determine the eigen values.
(iii)Determine the eigen vectors.

Question 05

a) Consider the line given by the equation 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1. Determine the new coordinates of
the points on the line
(i) If the line is shifted two units up vertically.
(ii) If the line is rotated 45° anti-clockwise about the origin.
(iii) If the line is rotated 30° anti-clockwise about the origin and shift three units to
the right vertically.
b) Consider the hyperbola given by the equation 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 1. If this hyperbola is rotated
45° anti-clockwise about the origin. Determine the new equation.
