Hot Dip Galvanizedi

1.0 Scope

1.1 This specification covers the general requirements for hot dip
galvanizing of structural steel, grating, ladders, handrails and
piping.

2.0 Surface Preparation and Application of Zinc Coating

2.1 Surface treatment, and application of the hot dip galvanizing process
shall be in accordance with one of the following codes/specifications.
Select the appropriate code which is common in the country where the
work is being performed.

• ISO 1459, 1460 and 1461


• BS-729
• ASTM A 123
• ASTM A 153, A120, A 143, A 384, A 385, a386
• CANADIAN STANDARDS ASSOCIATION CSA G164

2.2 All mechanical preparations, such as welding, drilling, shall be done


before hot dip galvanizing. For placement of holes that will be
necessary for venting air and distributing zinc liquid, contact the
galvanizing firm for recommended locations. If the design of the item
is inadequate for galvanizing the galvanizing contractor shall notify
the steel fabricates for clarification.

2.3 If steel members require identification labels shall be used; paint,


chalk or other materials which may cause coating adhesion problems
shall not be used.

3.0 Layer Thickness

3.1 Thickness of the zinc must be in accordance with the applicable


standards and norms and is dependant on the material thickness.

3.2 This specification shall be applied to carbon steel surfaces only. A


minimum of 2 ounces of zinc per square foot is required or as defined
by the codes referenced in 2.1. 2 ounces of zinc equates to
approximately 3.4 mils (85 microns).

4.0 Damaged Areas

4.1 Repair of damage in the galvanizing shop shall be according to the


applicable standards and codes. If areas are damaged during transport
or construction, they shall be repaired in accordance with G16S-0205-
01.
