Odyssey 17.01-10
Elision: Final short vowels are often dropped before a word beginning with a vowel and
marked with an apostrophe: τότε ἔπειτα ὑπὸ ποσσὶν à τότ᾽ ἔπειθ᾽ ὑπὸ ποσσὶν (17.2). If the
second word has an aspirated vowel, the first word will drop its final vowel and the final
consonant will assume the aspiration: ἔπειτα ὑπὸ à ἔπειθ᾽ ὑπὸ.

Purpose/Final clauses in Homer begin with ὡς/ὄφρα + subj. (opt. in secondary seq.); Attic
prefers ἵνα. Homer often adds κέ/ἄν to make the clause more indefinite; Attic does not.
ὡς ὥς…ἀποπέµψω so that (in such a manner that) you may send…
ὄφρα ὄφρα καλέσσω in order that (to the end that) I may summon…
* ὄφρα is strictly temporal (until, while) and may also occur in general temporal clauses.

Epic τε: The connective τε (both, and) often has a second use in epic as an untranslatable
particle with actions recurring or generally true. It is common in similes and general clauses.
ὥς θ ̓ ἵπποςp. 57 just as a horse… simile
νέῳ δέ τε πάντ᾽ ἐπέοικεν.p. 62 and it is completely fitting for a youth… general truth
Apocope is the ‘cutting off’ of a final vowel before a word with a consonant. The loss is not
marked off by an apostrophe. This device explains the usual variations among prepositions:
ἀνά, ἄν, ἆµ κατά, κάτ... κατά often assimilates the consonant τ after apocope:
ἐνί, ἐν, εἰν παρά, πάρ e.g. κὰπ πεδίον κὰλλιπε (κατάλιπε)
προτί, πρός Apocope also explains why the particle ἄρα is often ἄρ.
