Seeker’s Case Study

July 31st, 2020
Ms. Seeker had been hospitalized after trying to slash her wrists. She had learnt about her
mother’s pregnancy few months ago. As a result, she started drinking heavily in order to sleep at
night. Additionally, she started engaging in promiscuous behaviors. She also reported of
panicking and lack of self-consciousness to an extent she could hear a voice telling her to jump
off a bridge. During her admission, she appeared frail and disheveled. She also reported to have
developed depression and anxiety after becoming an adolescent. Additionally, she felt empty.
She had been raised by her grandmother after her parents divorced while she was three
years old. She had experienced sexual abuse from her teacher and she was angry with men after
they disappointed her in her life. She was having an active sex life. However, it was unsatisfying.
She had also tried forming relationships with men but they would part ways whenever she
became angry with the person. She also experienced difficulties arranging a stable living with
her classmates. She is reported to be angry and jealous over them. Diagnosis: Ms. Seeker was
diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Symptoms that helped me make the diagnosis:
Ms. Seeker has been experiencing unstable moods and relationships. Additionally, she
had developed a negative self-image. Moreover, she was feeling empty and felt like jumping off
the bridge and commit suicide. Diagnostic Criteria they relate to: Ms. Seeker meets criterion 3.
She has been suffering from identity disturbance where she has been developing negative image
about herself. Additionally, she met criterion 4. She has been impulsive through substance abuse
and sex. She is reported to have started excessive alcohol drinking. Besides, she started engaging
in one night stand. Ms. Seeker also met criterion 5. She had developed an idea of committing
suicide through jumping off the bridge. Moreover, she had developed self-mutilation behavior,
where she attempted slashing her wrists. She also met criterion 6. She was experiencing
reactivity of mood, where she appeared depressed and afraid. Ms. Seeker also met criterion 7.
She had developed chronic feelings of emptiness. Hence, following all the indicated
symptoms, it was clear that she was suffering from borderline personality disorder. Two other
possible diagnosis: The diagnosis are paranoid personality disorder and narcissistic personality
disorder. Not choosing them: Apart from meeting criterion 5 of persistent grudges especially to
men who have been disappointing her, she does not meet criterion 2 of unjustified doubts. She
also does not meet criterion 3 of having malicious information that would be used against her.
Therefore, paranoid personality disorder was ruled out. Similarly, she only met criterion 9 due to
her haughty and undesirable behaviors. However, she did not meet all the other criteria of
narcissistic personality disorder. As a result, the condition was ruled out. Prognosis: The disorder
if poorly managed, it will continue affecting her social interactions. Additionally, despite the
treatment, remission of symptoms may show up. Ms. Seeker has a negative childhood
experience, which could affect her treatment outcomes. She should also be hospitalized due to
the risky attempts of committing suicide or harming herself. However, through proper
interventions, the disorder would be treated.
