2.1 SUPPORTING SPECIFICATIONS. Where t h i s s p e c i f i c a t i o n is r e q u i r e d f o r a p r o j e c t , t h e f o l l o w i n g

Gauge. The s h o r t e s t d i s t a n c e between t h e r u n n i n g e d g e s of t h e t w o rails of a crack.

Long welded r a i l s (LWR). Rails chac have been welded i n c o l e n g t h s l o n g e r than 36 m, and chac may be
welded s u b s e q u e n t l y i n t h e t r a c k i n c o c o n t i n u o u s l e n g t h s w i t h o u t f i s h p l a t e d j o i n t s .
Mach h e
Heavy-weight machine. A machine t h a t may b e u s e d on a t r a c k u n d e r o c c u p a t i o n o n l y , and t h a t
r e q u i r e s t h e u s e of m e c h a n i c a l means f o r o f f - t r a c k i n g .

i s connected t o an SAR crack.
Recamp. Any camping c y c l e r e q u i r e d a f t e r t h e work h a s heen taken o v e r .
Running l i n e . A l i n e t h a t i s r e q u i r e d f o r t h e purpose of r u n n i n g t r a i n s from o n e p o i n t CO a n o t h e r . and
where t h e p o i n t t o p o i n t d i s t a n c e is more than 1 kin.
S e r v i c e l i n e . The p o r t i o n of a p r i v a t e s i d i n g chac l i e s between t h e SAR c r a c k and t h e b e g i n n i n g of the

3. MATERIALS
3.1 GENERAL. The C o n t r a c t o r s h a l l o b t a i n t h e E n g i n e e r ' s a p p r o v a l of a l l m a t e r i a l s b e f o r e t h e y are
used (see 8.1.1).

3.2 RAILWAY TKACKWRK


3.2.1 G e n e r a l . The PWM s u p p l i e d may. e x c e p t i n t h e c a s e of wood s l e e p e r s (see 3.2.6.1). be new or
second hand and of t h e s i z e ( o r mass), class, o r t y p e s p e c i f i e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n o r
scheduled.
3.2.2 R a i l s . Rails s h a l l b e of Class B or b e t t e r and of s t a n d a r d s e c t i o n . They s h a l l be sound, f r e e
from f l a w s , c r a c k s . s p l i t s , and c o r r o s i o n , and s h a l l have a t l e a s t one good r u n n i n g edge. R a i l s
s h a l l be a t least 6 m i n l e n g t h and s h a l l p r e f e r a b l y b e ' o f nominal l e n g t h 12 m or 18 m. Welds
s h a l l be a t l e a s t 3 m from f i s h p l a t e d or welded j o i n t s .
Where second-hand rails are used
a) r a i l ends s h a l l n o t be b a t t e r e d i n e x c e s s of 2 nim;
b) a l e n g t h of a t l e a s t 300 mni s h a l l be cropped t o remove damaged r a i l ends;
c) r a i l s s h a l l not have more t h a n t h e maximum wear g i v e n i n Column 5 of T a b l e 1 a p p r o p r i a t e t o t h e

approved by t h e SAR (see 3.2.8.5).

of r a i l b e i n g l a i d . F i s h p l a t e s s h a l l be sound i n a l l r e s p e c t s and second-hand f i s h p l a t e s s h a l l be
i n s u c h c o n d i t i o n t h a t t h e remaining draw is a t l e a s t 5 mm when t h e f i s h b o l t s are p u l l e d up t o a
t o r q u e or 340 N.m. F i s h b o l t h o l e s s h a l l n o t be worn o r deformed.
3.2.8 Ra il-t o-Sleepe r F a s t e n i n g s
3.2.8.1 S o l e p l a t e s s h a l l be of a t y p e t o s u i t t h e r a i l s e c t i o n s s p e c t f i e d . and t h e r a i l s h a l l have a n
inward c a n t of 1 i n 20. Second-hand s o l e p l a t e s s h a l l be in sound c o n d i t i o n w i t h no n o t i c e a b l e
r i d g e s on t h e r a i l f l a n g e seat.
3.2.8.2 R a i l c h a i r s and c h e c k - r a i l c h a i r s s h a l l be s u i t a b l e f o r use w i t h t h e r a i l s e c t i o n s s p e c i f i e d , and
s h a l l be s u p p l i e d c o m p l e t e w i t h r a i l - t o - c h a i r f a s t e n i n g s . Second-hand r a i l c h a i r s and c h e c k - r a i l
c h a i r s s h a l l be i n sound c o n d i t i o n .
3.2.8.3 Coach screws € o r hardwood s l e e p e r s s h a l l be of s i z e M22 Type B g a l v a n i z e d . provided t h a t Type A
s h a l l be used where t h e nominal t h i c k n e s s of t h e b a s e p l a t e is 30 mm.
3.2.8.4 Type U g a l v a n i z e d coach screws s h a l l be used w i t h softwood and l a m i n a t e d softwood s l e e p e r s .

5.1.3 P r i v a t e Siding Agreement. The Employer w i l l o b t a i n t h e SAK's approval of t h e s i d i n g plan and w i l l
e n t e r i n t o a p r i v a t e s i d i n g agreement with t h e local System Nanager of t h e SAR p r i o r t o t h e commence-
ment of c o n s t r u c t i o n .

5.2 METHODS AND PK0CEI)UKES


5.2. I Permanent Way Construct ion Standards. The permanent way s h a l l be constructed i n accordance w i t l i t h e
d e t a i l s shown on t h e s i d i n g p l a n approved i n t e r m s of 5.1.3, o t h e r a p p l i c a b l e requirements of t h e
s p e c i f i c a t i o n , and t h e requirements of t h e SAR.
The Contractor s h a l l ensure t h a t he and h i s workmen are f a m i l i a r w i t h t h e SAK'S Permanent way i n s t r u c -

5.2.2 --
S e t t i n g Out. I n terms of Subclause 5.1.1 of SABS 1200 A o r SABS 1200 AA, a s a p p l i c a b l e , t h e Engineer

5.2.3 Supervision. The Contractor s h a l l appoint a competent and experienced s u p e r v i s o r who has adequate
permanent way experience and is a q u a l i f i e d p l a t e l a y e r , and trackwork s h a l l be c a r r i e d o u t o n l y under
t h e personal s u p e r v i s i o n of t h e supervisor.
The Engineer nay s t o p t h e work a t any time i f such a s u p e r v i s o r has not been appointed by t h e Con-
t r a c t o r o r is n o t a v a i l a b l e on S i t e .
5.2.4 Laying of S l e e p e r s
5.2.4.1 General. S l e e p e r s s h a l l be l a i d square t o t h e r a i l s and p r o p e r l y bedded. The nominal spacing of
s l e e p e r s s h a l l be as shown on Drawing NB-4. Welded j o i n t s s h a l l be so located t h a t they do n o t
i n t e r f e r e w i t h s l e e p e r spacing.
A 1 1 s l e e p e r f i t t i n g s s h a l l be kept c l e a n while p l a t e l a y i n g i s i n progress. Spring c l i p s , where used,
s h a l l be f i t t e d i n an approved manner. Coach screw threads s h a l l be dipped i n c r e o s o t e before t h e
coach screws a r e screwed down, and T-bolt t h r e a d s s h a l l be s u i t a b l y l u b r i c a t e d b e f o r e the b o l t s are
tightened. Unless otherwise d i r e c t e d , t h e torque applied when s l e e p e r f a s t e n i n g s a r e tightened s h a l l
be 3 4 0 +20 N.m.
5.2.4.2 -
Wood s- l e e p e r s . Hardwood s l e e p e r s s h a l l be l a i d with t h e h e a r t down on t h e prepared formation. Holes
f o r coach screws, of diameter 13 mm f o r softwood and 17 mm f o r hardwood. s h a l l be bored through t h e
s l e e p e r and square t o the upper s u r f a c e of t h e s l e e p e r .
Durable wood Laper plugs o r dowels of length 2 5 mm s h a l l be i n s e r t e d and d r i v e n t o t h e bottom of t h e
h o l e s which s h a l l be f i l l e d with c r e o s o t e before t h e coach screws a r e screwed home.
I f a coach screw i s drawn from a s l e e p e r and t h e hole i s not t o be re-used, t h e hole s h a l l be plugged
a t once w i t h a durable wood t a p e r plug dipped i n c r e o s o t e o r t a r .
5.2.4.3 -

5.2.4.4 Concrete s l e e p e r s . No c o n c r e t e s l e e p e r s h a l l be used i f i t shows any d e f e c t o r s i g n of f a i l u r e of t h e
concrete, o r i f t h e s e a t or shoulder t o r e c e i v e t h e r a i l o r s o l e p l a t e i s damaged f o r more than a
q u a r t e r of i t s length i n any d i r e c t i o n . Surfaces of c o n c r e t e s l e e p e r s , s o l e p l a t e s , and c h a i r s , and t h e
s u r f a c e s of r a i l s t h a t bed on rubber pads s h a l l be brushed and cleaned immediately before r a i l laying.
Kubber pads s h a l l be thoroughly cleaned and, while t h e r a i l is being l a i d , they s h a l l be a c c u r a t e l y
positioned. Pads t h a t show s i g n s of d i s t o r t i o n . e i t h e r d u r i n g o r a i t e r p l a t e l a y i n g , s h a l l be removed
and r e f i t t e d c o r r e c t l y .
Concrete s l e e p e r s t h a t are damaged because t h e f i t t i n g s were i n c o r r e c t l y assembled o r were not kept
c l e a n , s h a l l be removed from t h e t r a c k and from t h e S i t e of t h e Works.
5.2.5 S t r a i g h t e n i n g and Bending of R a i l s
