4. PLANT
4.1 GENERAL

5. CONSTKUCTTON
5. I P KECAUTLONS
5.1.1 S a f e t y . In a d d i t i o n t o complying w i t h t h e requirements of Subclause 5.7 of SABS 1200 A o r Subclause
5.4 of SABS 1200 AA, as a p p l i c a b l e , and i n order t o p r o t e c t l i f e and p r o p e r t y when working o r when
handling equipment o r m a t e r i a l on o r n e a r running l i n e s , t h e Contractor s h a l l take a l l p r e c a u t i o n s
necessary Lo keep personnel, p l a n t , and m a t e r i a l s o u t s i d e t h e space d e f i n e d by t h e f i x e d s t r u c t u r e
gauge ( s e e Drawings NU-2 and NB-3), except t h a t , when work i s being c a r r i e d out under occupation
c o n d i t i o n s ( s e e 2.3). personnel and p l a n t may be w i t h i n t h e s a i d space.
When t r u c k s loaded w i t h PWM a r e handled, r a i l t r a n s p o r t e r s , whether moved manually o r mechanically, s h a l l
be propelled n o t f a s t e r than 6 km/h on s i d i n g s o€ l e n g t h less than 600 m.
5.1.2 Clearances. A railway s i d i n g s h a l l be so constructed as t o a i f o r d s t a n d a r d c l e a r a n c e between r o l l i n g
s t o c k and a11 s t r u c t u r e s and o t h e r f i x e d o b j e c t s a d j a c e n t t o the s i d i n g i n accordance w i t h t h e r e l e v a n t
requirenients of 5.2.1 and Drawings NB-2 and NB-3.
5.1.3 P r i v a t e Siding Agreement. The Employer w i l l o b t a i n t h e SAK's approval of t h e s i d i n g plan and w i l l
e n t e r i n t o a p r i v a t e s i d i n g agreement with t h e local System Nanager of t h e SAR p r i o r t o t h e commence-
ment of c o n s t r u c t i o n .

5.2.6 Laying of R a i l s
5.2.6.1 G e n e r a l . Except where t h e C o n t r a c t o r is r e q u i r e d i n terms of t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n and the
s c h e d u l e t o s u p p l y and i n s t a l l a take-off t u r n o u t , r a i l s s h a l t be l a i d from t h e end of a take-off
t u r n o u t t h a t h a s a l r e a d y b e e n i n s t a l l e d (by t h e SAR, i n the case of t r a c k owned by t h e SAR). PhN
s u r f a c e s t h a t h e a r on p a d s s h a l l be brushed c l e a n b e f o r e i n s e r t i o n of t h e pads. Each second-hand
r a i l s h a l l be l a i d w i t h t h e b e t t e r r u n n i n g edge on t h e gauge s i d e . Second-hand rails s h a l l be
matched f o r h e i g h t . Mismatches oE more t h a n 1 mm a t j o i n t s s h a l l be made good by
a) t h e u s e of set-up O K cranked and o f f s e t f i s h p l a t e s , o r
b) so b u i l d i n g up t h e lower r a i l by welding o r so removing material from the h i g h e r r a i l by g r i n d i n g
t h a t t h e d i f f e r e n c e i n h e i g h t t a i l s o f f a t a rate n o t e x c e e d i n g 1 mm p e r 200 mm i n l e n g t h .
5.2.6.2 L o c a t i n g of j o i n t s . R a i l s s h a l l b e l a i d w i t h s q u a r e j o i n t s . On c u r v e s where s p e c i a l rails are
75 mm s h o r t e r t h a n r a i l s used on s t r a i g h t s . t h e l e a d a t j o i n t s s h a l l n o t exceed 40 mm and where
s p e c i a l r a i l s 100 mm s h o r t e r t h a n s t r a i g h t r a i l s are u s e d , t h e l e a d s h a l l n o t exceed 50 mm.
Where no s p e c i a l rails are s u p p l i e d . t h e l e a d of one r a i l on t h e o t h e r on c u r v e s s h a l l n o t exceed
60 mm. To e n s u r e . when n e c e s s a r y , t h a t t h e l e a d d o e s n o t exceed 6 0 mm t h e C o n t r a c t o r s h a l l c u t t h e
end o f t h e r a i l so t h a t one f i s h b o l t h o l e is i n t h e correct p o s i t i o n and s h a l l d r i l l a n a d d i t i o n a l
f i s h b o 1t h o l e.
C l o s u r e r a i l s s h o u l d be p r e f e r a b l y a t l e a s t 6 m long b u t s h a l l , i n any e v e n t , b e a t least 3.5 m
l o n g , and s h a l l be s e c u r e d t o a t least 5 s l e e p e r s .
5.2.6.3 Expansion gaps. Expansion g a p s s h a l l be l e f t a t j o i n t s i n a c c o r d a n c e w i t h t h e t e m p e r a t u r e o f t h e

AfLer p l a t e l a y i n g , t h e t r a c k s h a l l be l i f t e d uniformly and evenly, both r a i l s t o g e t h e r , c a r e being
taken t o eiisure t h a t t h e t o p of t h e t r a c k is kept i n l i n e . The t r a c k s h a l l be brought to i t s proper
h e i g h t by successive l i f t s . each not exceeding 100 mm.
S l e e p c r s s h a l l be f i r m l y tamped underneath t h e r a i l s but only l i g h t l y tamped a t t h e c e n t r e . Each
s l e e p e r s h a l l be tamped t o t h e same degree of firmness. J o i n t s l e e p e r s s h a l l be tamped l a s t . A f t e r
tamping, b a l l a s t s h a l l be made up and boxed i n t o l i n e i n a neat and workmanlike manner.
The f i n i s h e d b a l l a s t s h a l l have a top width of 2,4 m and a s l o p e of l:l,5 on t h e shoulders. The top of
t h e b a l l a s t s h a l l be l e v e l with t h e t o p s of t h e s l e e p e r s except t h a t , i n t h e c a s e of c o n c r e t e s l e e p e r s ,
i t s h a l l be l e v e l w i t h t h e tops of t h e c e n t r e p o r t i o n s of t h e s l e e p e r s . On completion, t h e t r a c k s h a l l
be t r u e t o l i n e , curvature, and grade, and t h e whole of' che work s h a l l p r e s e n t a n e a t and workmanlike
appearance.
5.2.10 Turnouts, S l i p s , and C r o s . . Turnouts, s l i p s , and c r b s s i n g s s h a l l be c o n s t r u c t e d complete w i t h
c r o s s i n g b e a r e r s , standard switch boxes and f o o t g u a r d s , t o t h e standard gauges and c l e a r a n c e s r e q u i r e d
by t h e SAK (see SAK S p e c i f i c a t i o n E 104j). Working p a r t s s h a l l s l i d e f r e e l y on t h e s l i d e c h a i r s .
Switches s h a l l f i t t h e s t o c k r a i l c l o s e l y and a c c u r a t e l y w i t h a f u l l b e a r i n g a g a i n s t t h e head and s h a l l
r e s t normally on t h e s l i d e c h a i r s .
No p a r t of a turnout s h a l l have wear i n excess of t h e maximum given i n Table 1 , except t h a t t h e minimum
h e i g h t of s t o c k r a i l s of s t o c k s and guards and any c r o s s i n g s h a l l be a s follows:
57 kg r a i l : 155 mm
48 kg r a i l : 140 mm
4 0 kg r a i l : 117 nmi
30 kg r a i l : 105 imn.
Each s e t s h a l l c l o s e l y match t h e r a i l s i n t h e l i n e i n which i t i s i n s e r t e d .
Tumbler weights of switch boxes s h a l l be painted with one c o a t of an approved primer and two c o a t s of
an approved white p a i n t .
5.2. I 1 Stopblocks. Stopblocks s h a l l be l a i d , j o i n t e d , l i f t e d . tamped, and boxed i n a s s p e c i f i e d i n 5.2.6,
5.2.7, and 5.2.9.
Stopblocks s h a l l be painted with one c o a t of an approved primer and two c o a t s of an approved w h i t e
paint.
5.2.12 Clearance Markers. Clearance markers s h a l l be placed between converging t r a c k s a t p o i n t s where t h e
d i s t a n c e between c e n t r e s is 3,45 m i n t h e case of I 065 mm gauge t r a c k , and 2.75 m i n t h e c a s e of
6 1 0 nun gauge t r a c k . The markers s h a l l c o n s i s t of second-hand r a i l s bedded with t h e f l a n g e uppermost
