ASSESSMENT TASK 1: WRITTEN QUESTIONS
TASK SUMMARY:
This is an open book test – you can use the Internet, textbooks and other
documents to help you with your answers if required.
You must answer all 17 questions correctly.
Write your answers in the space provided.
If you need more space, you can use extra paper. All extra pieces of paper must
include your name and the question number/s you are answering.
You may like to use a computer to type your answers. Your assessor will tell you
if you can email them the file or if you need to print a hard copy and submit it.
Older people:
It always depends on what culture we focus on. For example, in Japanese culture older people are
known as wise and in some form superior. In indigenous cultures they are a symbol of connection
with the divine and are a sign of wisdom. In other cultures, as the western modern civilization,
elderly is treated poorly and that component of wisdom is underlooked and the physical negative
features that comes with the age are overlooked.
In general, older people had been looked as a symbol of wisdom and have been respected and
looked up to, in some cases this is not true, but these are the sad exceptions.
QUESTION 2
List five ways that you can support the carer of a person with a disability in their decision making.
1. Emotional support/therapy
3. Making them feel accepted and integrated to a collective. This can be done through a specific
sport or other sort of group activity
Self directed support is an approach which tries to help disabled people to assess their own
problems and provide solutions for them by themselves. This is done through an structured process
that is done by a support group that is conformed by departments or categories and aims to treat
the patient accordingly to his needs and is structured in a special way so it can attend the special
conditions of every patient
QUESTION 4
What are some examples of positive and negative attitudes or myths towards personal carers such as
a mother, sister or friend of an individual with a disability? Provide at least three examples of each.
A myth for personal carers is that when they are familiars with the patients is easier to treat them,
actually it can be more difficultsince there are a lot of emotions involved int his tyoe of relationships.
A negative myth is that personal carers don’t care about the patients and they treat them as clients.
This depends on the agency of carers but in general they have a vocation for helping and suporting
people on troubles. The third negative myth is that men are not good carers but this is not true.
QUESTION 5
Describe a person-centred approach for each traditional approach to support services listed in the
table below.
Accesses aged care or Disability services and care is adapted to every different case because
disability services that are every person is different and everyone has different conditions and
currently available limitations
Focuses on individual from Takes into account the disabilities, professional point of view or
an aged or a disability whatever conditions the patient has but focuses on the specific
professional viewpoint characteristics and unique features of the patient whatsoever
Traditional approach Person-centred approach
Power and authority is with In this dynamic where the professional is taking care of a patient nor
the professionals power or authority are important for the care of the patient. The most
important thing in this dynamic is the patient and its needs.
QUESTION 6
Nigel was hired to work at a mining site. A few days into his job, other team members began to
complain to management that Nigel was not overly responsive when it came to communicating to
get tasks done.
Nigel was born partially deaf in his right ear and, to manage for the most part of his life, he wears a
hearing aid and has an ear implant.
Management were surprised, as Nigel had successfully completed the induction training and was
offered the position based on his skills and his interview outcome.
Nigel told management about his disability prior to being offered the position.
The same week he started his job, Nigel was advised he could no longer work at the site due to the
communication issues and complaints raised by the team.
Does Nigel have a case for unfair dismissal? Explain your answer.
Yes, of course Nigel has a case for unfair dismissal because he was hired under the knowledge that
he had this disability. Its on the company to not have planned or seemed this situation in a better
manner or not hired a person with such condition. Nigel can ask for monetary retribution for the loss
of his time, money and emotional or psychological investment, without naming the discrimination
that can be involved in the case.
QUESTION 7
Solomon advises his new employer that he has a mental health condition that he is receiving
treatment for. He will need to start work a bit later on some mornings in order to make his specialist
appointments. Solomon’s employer tells one of their major clients about his health condition so they
know when Solomon is available at work.
Has Solomon’s employer breached his rights to privacy? Explain your answer. 7
Yes, his boss shouldn’t tell anyone of the physical problems of Salomon, he has to have to freedom
for managing them for himself and deciding who he wants them to know and who doesn’t. His boss
is trespasing these limits and violating his space and freedom of choice.
QUESTION 8
In 2012, the ABS conducted a survey of disability, ageing and primary carers in Australia. Refer to the
results below and explain the key findings of this survey.
People aged between 15 and 64 years with disability have both lower participation and
higher unemployment rates
18.5% of the population, had a disability.
QUESTION 9
Explain the difference in providing low versus high support for the following:
Activities of daily That the patient stresses out and He can be guided to a positive result
living have more problems in general in his daily activities and therefore
because he cant develop his day to live an easier/happier life
day activities succesfuly
Support type Low support High support
Routine changes That the changes are not positive That the patient advances and go
and the patient ends losing time and further in his life as the changes on
doing stuff in an incorrect way routine help him to improve his daily
activities and general wellbeing. For
this is necessary a good assessment
of his routine and at the same time
for this is needed a good
professional.
QUESTION 10
What criteria are you required to meet in order to be eligible for the carer allowance in Australia?
1. Age transitions
5. When you graduate and start working on a job or when you have children
QUESTION 12
Provide one example of an organisation that assists with providing personal carers with respite or
support services
Disability Service/organisation
Mental health National alliance on mental illness investigates these illness and provide
solutions to them
Dementia Dementia society of america gives support to people with the illness
QUESTION 13
Describe the impact of the lifecycle transition for a family who has a member with a severe disability.
It is more difficult because its not the same as with people without these types of conditions. For the
parents who are responsible of these people its different because they must adopt unique attitudes
and strategies towards the change the person with disability is suffering. The impact is different in
every case because as one patient can have a grave condition and a high self-esteem and
adaptability to its situation another can have a lighter condition and a low self-esteem and
adaptability. So, every case will gradually increase or decrease the difficulty for the family to deal
with its familiar.
QUESTION 14
Describe each type of family structure in the table below. For each type, explain potential issues or
impacts on a person in the family structure.
Sample responses below.
Family structure
Nuclear Description of structure: A family integrated by a father a mother and its
kids. The the primary elements are three: mom, dad and sons or daughters.
Impacts/issues:
I think this is the best-case scenario for someone with a difficult
condition because it’s the type of family where typically more unity
and integration there is and there is the support of the masculine
and feminine figure.
There are no major issues when a functional nuclear family helps
the member with a condition, the problem comes when the family
is dysfunctional
Single parent Description of structure: It's when the family is formed by only one
parent and its children
Impacts/issues:
As the charge is put on only one person is more difficult for that person to
handle the condition and give the adequate support to the member with the
disability. But it all varies, it depends on the strength and the type of guide
that the parent is giving to his children. I’m sure there are cases where
more accurate support is shown coming from a single parent than from a
nuclear family.
Impacts/issues:
In all types of familiar structures the impact and the issues varies in every
case. The common difficulties for these type of structure is that one or in
some cases the two main figures or heads of the family are unrelated
biologically with the children and that can cause a lack of compromise of
the parent towards the child, specially when we talk about special condition
kids. But it varies, if the compromise is done strongly enough regarding of
blood relating the parent can be the best as supporting his child as he can.
QUESTION 15
Explain the difference between the social and medical model of service
Social model: It says that people is disabled for the social barriers and limitations disabled
people suffer in society. The source of the problem for this model is not the
person nor its condition but the society and the response it has to the patient
limitations an conditions.
Medical model: It says that the disabilities come from physical and biological issues that produce
limitations. This medical model states that the limitations and conditions are the
source of the disability of the patient
QUESTION 16
Provide three examples of how you would protect client or customer information at work.
1. By having a policy that clearly states the privacy rights that clients have when accessing to
the service I’m offering them
2. By starting from my own example and respecting costumers rights for information and privacy

ASSESSMENT TASK 2: CASE STUDIES
TASK SUMMARY:
You are to read the case studies and complete the questions that follow.
Toby is responsible for preparing Brian’s meals in conjunction with his nutritionist and treating GP.
Toby also encourages Brian to commit to his daily schedule of physical activities to help with
maintain regular exercise. Brian’s activities involve going for short walks in the park, playing ball
sports and following a work out routine alongside Toby using home exercise equipment.
As a result of this physical regime, Brian’s physical activity and observed energy levels have
increased. Emotionally he appears happier and willing to maintain his scheduled activities and set
meals. Brian enjoys Toby around and is happy he is his carer. He trusts Toby being his family. When
Toby is not around Brian he has a tendency to become agitated and pick at his skin. Brian heavily
depends on Toby’s support.
Having to look after Brian full time is starting to take a toll on Toby’s energy levels. He often finds
that he does not have enough time for himself and is starting to feel isolated from living his own life.
His social activities and outings naturally reduced when he became Brian’s sole carer and he
became unavailable to pursue any romantic relationships of his own. Toby decides that he may
need additional carer support to continue with the carer responsibility. He is also considering some
casual work to keep up his own finances. This would also help fund support services for Brian if he is
willing to allow for other carers.
When Toby has this discussion with Brian, Brian is not pleased. He is immediately stressed and
starts picking at his arms, face and scalp. He starts looking everywhere for food outside of his
scheduled meals and attempting to eat anything he thinks is edible. Brian becomes withdrawn from
Toby and aggressive. He refuses to participate in any of his regular daytime activities and looks for
something to eat instead.
The relationship changes because Toby needs more time for himself and the time he is dedicating to
Brian is starting to affect his levels of energy. For Brian is difficult because he is emotionally
attached with Toby since he helps him in almost everything. Due to the sickness of Brian the change
on the relationship produces in him a lot of stress due to the withdraw of the relationship with Toby.
That he stops doing exercise and generally moving and living a healthy life due to the emotions
produced by the withdrawal from Toby. Psychologically, Brian can suffer a lot since he thinks he
needs Toby to be happy so it will be difficult for him to be independent and he can suffer a lot and
even be depressed if he doesn’t have Toby on his life.
3. What strategies could Toby implement to help Brian with this change?
Gradually start showing Brian that he can develop the activities that they do together alone and
getting him used to them alone and be happy. The problem with Brian is that he becomes anxious
when he think of the possibility of a life without Toby. All that Toby has to do is find the way to show
Brian that he doesn’t need anyone to be happy and he alone can have the strength to do the day to
day activities of a happy human being.
Someone that is not emotionally attached to him but at the same time can offer the same quality of
care or even better that Toby offered to Brian on his time. Also someone that is willing to take care
and gull responsibility of Toby without attaching too much emotionally with him.
5. Describe the physical and emotional impacts on Toby in this situation.
For Toby it’s a dilemma, its very difficult because on one side he is helping his sibling out of love, but
on the other side he is a human being and is normal that he is getting tired of spending his time and
energy almost solely on his brother. Its very difficult because is his sibling and he has the moral duty
to help him but he also has the right to invest more in him than in anybody regardless of any
situation. This whole situation can produce a lot of stress and pain in his life, weak people can fall
sick or depressed.
He needs to find professional health to first plan the “detachment” strategy from Brian´s daily
routine and then find a carer that takes charge of Brian. He needs to be able to be independent and
solve his needs without any help. Toby wasn’t helping him because althought he was offering him a
service he was causing a collateral damage.
7. What additional information or support services could you provide or recommend to Brian’s family?
With the adequate professional health and emotional service will be enough. Also, psychiatrically
therapy is always a good option. The best is that they research what is best for Brian´s situation and
in unity they decide what is the best option to take.
Larry was a great carer for Doug as they had been childhood friends and grown up together in the
community. Larry was Doug’s best man at his own wedding and a good friend with Doug’s wife
passed away. Doug and Larry had grandfathers who served during the way, which is one of the
reasons they bonded when they met. Doug had also served some time fighting in the Asia-pacific
war. Their families were close and both grand-parents held strong views on other nations and
cultures, speciality people in South-East Asia due to his wartime experience.
Larry was previously married to Holly whom Doug was very fond of. Holly was also a childhood
friend who grew up in the suburbs. Before the onset of his condition, Doug was very sad when he
found out Larry and Holly were separating.
One day Larry tells Doug about his new partner, that he has developed a relationship with. Larry’s
partner plans to move in with them soon. Larry is very excited for Doug to meet her and suggests
that she will be a great help with assisting with Doug’s care some days during the week, especially
since she has a level of experience with nursing and care.
When Larry’s new partner Tran moves in Doug does not greet or acknowledge her. Tran attempts to
help Doug with some daily tasks but Doug does not seem to cooperate well and gives Tran the silent
treatment. On some occasions Doug even made aggressive racial comments under his breath about
Tran. Larry asks Doug what is wrong and Doug tells Larry that he is disappointed in his choice of
females and reiterates his opinions about what he thinks of Asian people.
Tran continues to try really hard to build the same level of rapport with Doug that Larry has and
begins to feel helpless in her efforts. She does not understand why Doug does not want to engage
with her. When Tran asks Larry, he apologises and explains that his behaviour and attitude
developed during and after his time in the war, most especially since he lost a few mates during
that time.
He may be jealous of Tran since Larry was single while taking care of him or he could be upset
because he is fond of an ex wife of Larry and now he is with other person. Also is an emotional
change not a rational one, because the source of the problem is the emotions inside Doug.
8. What are the psychological and physical risks posed to Doug?
That he starts to stress out a lot or turns aggressive towards Tran or Larry. Also the situation can
become very dense for Larry to the point where he quits being Doug´s carer and this can signify
more emotional weight for Doug. Doug can also be abandoned and suffer the consequences of it
9. What strategies could Larry implement to support Doug with this change?
Communicating clearly to Doug that Tran and Larry are together and that is not going to change, get
him used to that situation and if he continues to refuse to this situation Larry should quit being his
carer for his own sake and Doug’s. Also he should search him another carer or other strategy to
treat Doug.
10. If you were Doug’s care attendant, what strategies would you put in place to improve the care
relationship?
I would not put responsibilities on Tran to take care of Doug, I would just encourage them to have a
healthy relationship and that in a natural way they can establish a friendship. If this doesn’t work is
essential that Larry stops being Doug´s carer and he gradually retires from his care and give this
responsibility to a different professional.
Tran can feel that is on her the fact that Larry is stressed out and she can think that there is
something wrong with her relationship with Larry, this can bring pain and doubt to her soul. Also,
she is an eternal actor in the situation so it has to be difficult to deal with it.
12. What type of support would Larry and Tran need to help cope with the care relationship?
Therapy and sharing activities of common like. Also talking and communicating in a normal and
natural way. Larry should act as a medium for them to form a relationship.
Every Wednesday, Kimmy’s uncle Stewart, takes her to attend music workshops through a
community outreach program to support her musical interests.
When Kimmy was younger she displayed a strong interest in playing the piano, guitar and singing.
Her uncle Stewart used to be in a local band and taught her how to play a few basic songs on the
guitar. The workshop is held at a recording studio that is booked out for two hours so Kimmy is able
to interact with the group, play with some instruments and practise her singing.
Every Wednesday, aside from looking forward to going to the music workshop, Kimmy looks forward
to going for the car ride with her uncle.
He has been providing transport for Kimmy for a long time in his cool car and she feels comforted
when she sees him pull up in the driveway at the same time each week.
She knows his vehicle very well and, as a result of her compulsion, has the tendency to check every
feature of the car when she jumps in. Kimmy finds a sense of comfort in her uncle Stewart and his
car. Her uncle gives Kimmy the time to feel and touch the features of the car when she gets in,
familiar with her routine and sometimes does it with her.
Sometimes her uncle Stewart joins in the music class when he has time. Having her uncle around
helps lift her mood and keeps her less distracted.
Stewart has his daughter, husband and the newborn twins visiting from overseas and is planning to
take a few trips to the country to show his family around. His son in law Ben has never visited the
country before so he would like to show off some of the main tourist attractions. This will also give
him some time to spend with his new grandsons.
He tells his brother who is Kimmy’s dad so they can arrange alternative transport for Kimmy to
attend her music workshops for the next month. Her dad is too old to operate a vehicle and her
mum is not fit to drive a car. They will need to arrange a taxi service but Kimmy is not happy with
this news and becomes overly sad and anxious. These symptoms increase when the taxi driver is
late to pick her up in a new vehicle the following Wednesday.
She was emotionally attached to what meant the trip to the outreach center with her uncle in the
car of her uncle, now that he cannot drive her there she refuses to go. Since she has OCD and
Bipolar disorder a subtle change like these can produce a lot of stress in her.
13. What are the psychological and physical risks posed to Kimmy?
She can stop going to her musical meeting that helps her with her mood and promotes her natural
talent, she can become bored out and depressed. She can go down on a depression spiral due to
thee emotional problems this whole situation can bring to her.
14. What could you suggest to Kimmy’s mum and dad that might help Kimmy with this change?
Find a cool uber driver with a cool car that can take her every day. Arrange with him what kind of
behaviours he has to have. Or to search a relative that can take her to the meetings in the same
way she was taken before.
15. What support is needed for Kimmy’s parents?
Good advice since the situation is not grave but needs and effective solution. Emotional therapy and
support from her family also because although the situation is not that bad it can convert on a bad
one.
The driver should not be affected by Kimmy´s behaviour. Kimmy´s driver should understand her and
guide her to lift her mood as Stewart does.. This can be done through a relative that can understand
the situation.
17. What are the taxi driver’s needs?
18. What additional information or support services could you provide or recommend to Kimmy’s
parents?
That they go to the outreach and find out if she has any friends there that could possibly help her
with the ride. Also, that they go to a support center for people with this type of condition and talk to
a professional who advises them to action

and share experiences and socialize normally with other people
The self centered apporached because it showed to give more independence to the patients and it
showed to be more effective in less time than different types of approaches
23. Describe the physical and emotional impact on carers in the situations discussed. How were the
impacts managed?
Its a lot of stress because these situations are not easy to handle. They are really complicated as
they involve violence, agressiveness and difficulties that the patient has but the carer has to be
strong enough to hold this and put the patient first and help him
No they werent provided with additional support afar from the carers and group support they
received from us.
25. In any of the situations discussed, were there any legal or ethical considerations needed in
providing support?
