On a hill in the area of Borneo, there lived a poor widow and her daughter. The girl was really
beautiful. However, she was very lazy and spoiled. She loved to dress up every day, but never helped her
mother.
One day, they went down to the village for shopping. The market was far away from their house. They
walked there. The girl got dressed very nice and walked in front of her mother. While the widow walked
behind, carried a basket and wore dirty clothes. Nobody knew they were mother and child.
While entering the village, people looked at them. The young men were so fascinated by the girl’s
beauty. However, she was in contrast to the woman walking behind her. It made people wonder. Some young
men asked her whether the woman was her mother. But the girl arrogantly replied that the widow was her
maid. More people asked her along the way to the market. She gave the same answer that the widow was her
slave.
Eventually, the mother’s heart hurt to hear the answer. Mother prayed to God to punish her ungodly
daughter. Suddenly, the girl stopped and slowly turned to be a stone. The girl cried and apologized to his
mother. But it was too late. A pretty girl was turned into a stone and continued to tear; it’s called A Crying
Stone.

Malin Kundang
A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra lived a woman and her son named
Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang and his mother had to live hard because his father had passed away when he
was a baby. Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent, and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish. After
getting fish, he sold them.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant’s ship being invaded by pirates. With
his bravery, Malin Kundang helped the merchant defeat the pirates.
“Thank you for helping me, young man. Let me invite you to sail with us.
Then, Malin Kundang went home to meet his mother.
“Please, let me go, mom. I don’t like to be here, I don’t like to be a sailorman. I want to see the world.”
“But my son, I will feel lonely if you go.”
“Please, mom. If I go out of this small village, we can have a better future, we can be rich!”
Then Malin Kundang’s mother let him to go sailing. Years passed, Malin Kundang became a rich
young man. He had a huge ship and a lot of crews who worked for him. He also married to a beautiful woman.
When he was sailing on his trading journey, his ship landed on a coast near a small village. The local people
recognized that it was Malin Kundang. The news ran fast in the town that Malin Kundang had become rich.
An old woman, who was Malin Kundang’s mother, ran to the beach to meet
the rich merchant. She looked at him and was sure that it was Malin Kundang, her son, that she had been
missing all the time.
“Malin.” said Malin Kundang’s mother.
“Who is she, darling? She looks so dirty.” said Malin Kundang’s wife.
Malin was shy to admit that the old woman was her mother.
“Malin. I miss you so much, my dear son.” said Malin Kundang’s mother.
“Who are you? I don’t have mother. My mother passed away long time ago.” said Malin Kundang.
“Malin, I am your mom, Malin. How can you forget?”
“Enough, poor woman! I’ve never had a mother like you, a dirty and old woman!”
After that, he sailed the ocean and left the old woman who was then full of sadness and anger. Feeling
enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang.
“Malin, I know that it’s you. I can see my blood running in your body. I am so sure that you are Malin
Kundang. You are my son. How can you do this to me? How dare you to forget me? Oh Lord, if he doesn’t
want to admit that I am his mom, if he is too shy to admit that I am his mom, I curse him, I curse him to be a
stone.
Suddenly a thunderstorm came in the quiet sea, wrecking his huge ship.
He was thrown out to a small island.
“No! My ship has damaged, I lost everything. Wait, my legs. I can’t move. No, no! Mom.. I am sorry mom, I
am sorry mom .. ”
It was really too late for him to avoid his curse; he had turned into a stone.
Well, from this story, we can learn that hurting mom’s heart is a bad attitude. Never hurt your mom’s feeling.
