What is the history of solar energy and when were solar panels invented?
Though solar energy has found a dynamic and established role in today’s clean
energy economy, there’s a long history behind photovoltaics (PV) that brought the
concept of solar energy to fruition. With the way the cost of solar has plummeted
in the past decade, it’s easy to forget that going solar had a completely different
meaning even just 15 years ago. Let’s go back a few centuries to the origins of
solar PV and explore the history of solar energy and silicon solar technology.
In theory, solar energy was used by humans as early as 7th century B.C. when
history tells us that humans used sunlight to light fires with magnifying glass
materials. Later, in 3rd century B.C., the Greeks and Romans were known to
harness solar power with mirrors to light torches for religious ceremonies. These
mirrors became a normalized tool referred to as “burning mirrors.” Chinese
civilization documented the use of mirrors for the same purpose later in 20 A.D.
Another early use for solar energy that is still popular today was the concept of
“sunrooms” in buildings. These sunrooms used massive windows to direct sunlight
into one concentrated area. Some of the iconic Roman bathhouses, typically those
situated on the south-facing side of buildings, were sunrooms. Later in the 1200s
A.D., ancestors to the Pueblo Native Americans known as the Anasazi situated
themselves in south-facing abodes on cliffs to capture the sun’s warmth during
cold winter months.
In the late 1700s and 1800s, researchers and scientists had success using sunlight
to power ovens for long voyages. They also harnessed the power of the sun to
produce solar-powered steamboats. Ultimately, it’s clear that even thousands of
years before the era of solar panels, the concept of manipulating the power of the
sun was a common practice.
The development of solar panel technology was an iterative one that took a number
of contributions from various scientists. Naturally, there is some debate around
when exactly they were created and who should be credited for the invention.
Some people credit the invention of the solar cell to French scientist Edmond
Becquerel, who determined light could increase electricity generation when two
metal electrodes were placed into a conducting solution. This breakthrough,
However, solar cells as we know them today are made with silicon, not selenium.
Therefore, some consider the true invention of solar panels to be tied to Daryl
Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson’s creation of the silicon photovoltaic
(PV) cell at Bell Labs in 1954. Many argue that this event marks the true invention
of PV technology because it was the first instance of a solar technology that could
actually power an electric device for several hours of a day. The first ever silicon
solar cell could convert sunlight at four percent efficiency, less than a quarter of
what modern cells are capable of.
Solar energy: what you need to know
Solar power is usable energy generated from the sun in the form of electric or
thermal energy. Solar energy is captured in a variety of ways, the most common of
which is with photovoltaic solar panels that convert the sun’s rays into usable
electricity. Aside from using photovoltaics to generate electricity, solar energy is
commonly used in thermal applications to heat indoor spaces or fluids. Residential
and commercial property owners can install solar hot water systems and design
their buildings with passive solar heating in mind to fully take advantage of the
sun's energy with solar technology.
Interested in benefiting from solar power? Solar panels are installed at three main
scales: residential, commercial, and utility. Residential-scale solar is typically
installed on rooftops of homes or in open land (ground-mounted) and is generally
between 5 and 20 kilowatts (kW), depending on the size of a property. Commercial
solar energy projects are generally installed at a greater scale than residential solar.
Though individual installations can vary greatly in size, commercial-scale solar
serves a consistent purpose: to provide on-site solar power to businesses and non-
profits. Finally, utility-scale solar projects are typically large, several megawatt
(MW) installations that provide solar energy to a large number of utility customers.

A solar system which works with the grid is called on-grid or grid-tied solar
system, there are three components in this system, such as
● Panels,
● Inverters
● Installation Kit
⮚ GI structure
⮚ Wiring (DC wire, Earthing wire and AC wire)
⮚ Earthing rods (Copper bonded)
⮚ U-Clumps
⮚ Z-Clumps
⮚ Base plates
The main purpose of installing an on-grid solar system is to save electricity bill.
The advantage of on-grid solar system is awesome, if you are not using electricity
at your home, the power generated from solar system will be fed back to the grid.
The state government will give you remuneration for sending electricity to grid
in some states.
2. OFF-GRID SOLAR SYSTEM (WITH BATTERY)
An off-grid solar system is more popular and comes with a power backup. It works
independently of the grid. Most home appliances such as Fans, TV, Cooler, AC,
Water Pump etc. can work through this system. For instance, a 1 kW off-grid solar
system is sufficient for a 2-4 BHK house. But if you also want to run 1HP Water
Pump in your home you could use a 3 kW off-grid solar system. If you are
planning to run an AC then you should use a 5 kW system. For commercial setups
like a shop, clinic or small mill, petrol pump a 10 kW off-grid solar system should
be used.
It is the most common type of solar power system with backup. It works in day and
night both, during the day, solar panel charges the battery and runs the home
appliances such as Air Conditioners, Cooler, Television and submersible pump. At
night, when the sun is not available, Inverter runs your home appliances using the
battery power.
A 1 kW off-grid solar system will cost you around INR 95,000 if you buy it
from Finsol360 Solar. It can easily power a 3-4 BHK home and run
smoothly for 8-10 hours.
A 3 kW off-grid solar system will cost you INR 2,85,000 if you buy from
Finsol360 Solar. It is used to power larger homes, shops and offices and
can run smoothly for 8-10 hours. It is a powerful solar system and can
easily support the running of fans, lights, television, refrigerator etc. but not
a 2 ton AC. Available at INR 4,25,000 Luminous 5 kW solar system is
used for running even larger homes, offices and commercial
shops. Luminous 10 kW off grid solar system can be easily used in
offices, commercial shops and factories and comes with a price tag of INR
9,50,000. This system is capable of generating 50 units every day.
3.HYBRID SOLAR SYSTEM
Hybrid system is a combination of solar energy storage with grid connection. This
system provide the flexibility of being able to store the power into batteries that
your solar system generated during the daytime instead of feeding it back into
electric grid.
How much cost is required to setup Hybrid plant?
Hybrid solar systems are connected to the grid and have a backup solar battery for
excess energy storage.A 6 KW hybrid solar system typically costs about INR 4
lakhs after federal incentives but will require a battery, which costs about 75000 on
average.
How do this work?
Hybrid solar panel systems are similar to a grid solar system but use batteries to
store energy for later use. This ability to store energy enables most hybrid system to
operate as a backup power supply during a blackout , similar to UPS
(Uninterrupted Power Supply).
SOLAR STREET LIGHTS
A solar street light is a stand alone solution for lighting up a area where there is no
grid at all. Our solar street light is composed of Solar Pv, rechargeable lithium
batteries & led lamp. Solar Pv charges the rechargeable battery which powers the
Led light during the night time. Our light recharges during the day time and
automatically turn on at dusk and also comes with dimmer option. Our lights give
back up of 2-3 days which means even if there is no sun for 2-3 days it will still lit
during the night time.
9Watt 12Watt 16Watt 24Watt
• Installation in 30 minutes
• Standalone solution
• Back up of 2-3 days without sun
• Automatic on and off Application of Solar Street Lights
• Can be used in villages, farm houses, colonies, hospitals, institutes & even domestic
homes

1. Marketing & Awareness Department
This department deals with spreading awareness among masses regarding the
products in which the company deals in an economic and effective manner. The
department focuses on customer sentiments and their satisfaction.
Awareness is to be spread among masses regarding the benefits and limitations
about the product. We used digital platforms such as google reviews and
instagram for spreading awareness. We also gave information regarding various
brands dealing in solar projects and their respective benefits and drawbacks. The
process of approvals and permissions from government was to be completed by
the company.
Marketing department passed on clients to sales department who were
interested in converting their residential or commercial places to renewable
sources of energy i.e solar.
We used grapevine technique of marketing to cover masses. It refers to an
informal channel of business communication through which a network is built
from existing clients which builds a strong connection with new approaches.
Commercial spaces were approached by us.We pitched several entrepreneurs of
Rajpura locality and distributed pamphlets at residential places provided by our
manager. The pamphlets gave a complete insight about the services provided by
us as well as the reasons due to which one should shift to solar energy.
2. Duty assigned
Finsol 360 organisation hired us for spreading awareness in public regarding
solar projects i.e how solar energy can be used as electricity at a very
minimal cost and is ecofriendly source. We were assigned to conduct
meetings at residential as well as commercial spaces.
People were not aware regarding the benefits of solar energy & we were
given the task to inform masses about the tremendous benefits of solar
energy. We used online platforms to spread awareness among people
regarding benefits of solar.
● First and foremost we were supposed to plan our day and make a mindmap of
the market which we had to cover on that particular day.
● Then we used to leave office and start covering the areas which we decided.
● In the evening after covering the market areas we used to reach home and
compile all the data in the form of excel sheet and submit it to our manager.
